Icons

I find it hard to believe that nobody has asked this question. If they have, I haven't seen it....

Is there any way, among all the skinning that has been done through the work of such people as Mr. Looney, that the icons can be changed?

I am slightly underwhelmed by the shoes, jack-in-a-box and juggling mutant teletubby User posted image

Good news and bad news....

Good news I believe this is possible (I've heard of it).
Bad news I haven't a clue how to do it yet, but if there is plenty of interest and some wanted icons, I'll bang my head together with Loony and see if we can figure it out.

Flipside

Good News, It's not as complex a task as first thought. Loony said he looked into it a while ago but shelved the idea when he couldn't figure it out. (The only info we found being in German or poor English with bad grammar couldn't have helped either...)
Non the less we had a look last night and have an idea of how to make them.

Bad News (There's always some) You do realise that icons can only be changed on Desk and not in other 'folders' (internet, office, extras, or extended extras). Therefore we see it as a mildly pointless exercise to only be able to change icons there.

Tell us what you want (not a recoded internet, etc) but if enough people are interested I may look into knocking out some icon packs.

Flipside

Hey, what a man!

If it's going to involve lots of work then I agree with you, it does seem a bit overkill for something so small.

Maybe if there's more demand... whoi knows? Thanks a billion for the info though!

Yeah that's where I got my info from, it's not that hard if anyone want's to give it a go. I just don't see it being too important, as I like to keep a clean desk so I can admire the skins User posted image

If anybody is interested, I've started to look at this and I have 2 screenshots ( http//www.twyn-y-berllan.com/9210/Screen1.jpg and http//www.twyn-y-berllan.com/9210/Screen2.jpg - you don't need me to tell you that I didn't design the background ).

There's a lot of work to be done on the masks used by the icons, but as a proof of concept, I think it's presentable.

Anybody who wants the 7 icons that I've done so far can find them here -> http//www.twyn-y-berllan.com/9210/extraicons.mbm

Another advantage to getting rid of some of those original unuseable icons is that the file is a couple of k smaller User posted image

I hope I haven't broken any rules by posting links here, but thanks to Colin for the link above.

That is a very cunning workaround my friend User posted image If only we could do that for Office and extras. Those internet icons are going straight to my 9210 User posted image Keep 'em coming!

OH MY GOD

They look really really nice... User posted image

Erm, they are lovely, but how the hel did you get that screenshot of the icons in place in internet. I can't see them n mine User posted image copied them to the obvious place and rebooted. What did you do mate?

Hi,

All I did was a search in File Manager for all files ending with .mbm, viewed their properties and replaced them.

Unfortunately, the internet icons seem to only apply to creating a new connection User posted image

This seems to work with most files, but I'm having trouble with File Manager 0 the default file icon and the trash can icons work, but not the folder icons. Any ideas?

Here are some more ->

As for uploading them, no problem! I'm chuffed you like them.[ This Message was edited by TANKERx on 2002-01-19 1345 ]

Ah, I see, that's a pain.

I did a search for other files I could edit myself and I should be compiling a list, if you want to submit the ones that you know can be changed. Unfortunately though you can't change the programs' icons so they change elsewhere, but still, something is better than nothing.

Go TANKERx! Go TANKERx! Go TANKERx!!!!

Tanker - no worries about posting links, the more messages the better. I just run this site for fun so something like this is good as it helps the community. Look good too.

When I get a chance to update the customisation section woudl you object to me putting these files in it.

Cheers

Hi all,

Wonderfull Tanker!!!!!! Btw a while ago i made a few icons in colour for the s7/nb. I made them using a small opl-app. Since the 9210 doesn't know opl (i mean opl-source) i requested a friend of mine to write such an app in C++ (if possible). Although i think it's illegal, i will let you all know if this is possible easily. The icons of the apps are in files named .AIF. These files contain also other info than only graphics and can therefor not be opened with all the available mbm tools & editors.

regard,
Jan

Damn I knew I was looking at the right file, but that the Hex Editor was the wrong tool for the job... Hmmms, /me wonders on a hack, anyone know the file format? (I.e. how the data is laid out in the file). I may be able to write a DOS converter.

Colin,

Of course you can (it's the link you gave me that enabled me to do what little I have anyway)! All I did was try this out and I think it looks nice, particularly since a good artist could potentially make drab applications like Clock look not at all bad (unlike my attempt User posted image )

Yes I know what you mean jan, I use it too. I think it uses an OPX which means we can't convert it to the 9210 easily unfortunately..

Tankerxx - did you see my request?

Rafe

Rafe,

Can you send me this app??? Mine doesn't use an opx at all, it's just a self written opl of a few lines.

Cheers,

Rafe,

Sorry I didn't answer - no objections at all, glad to be of help User posted image

Also, I had 5 minutes to spare this afternoon, so I got my borwser down the cartoon network ( http//www.cartoonnetwork.com/games/games_misc/downloadables.html ) and got my hands on some icons which are free for download.

Unfortunately, they're a little small (designed for Windows). I don't like scaling things up if I can help it...

Do what you like with them User posted image

PS. I've also noticed that if you load one icon set and set your icons, you can load another and the original stay as they are (probably copy the icon when you set it) which means you can mix icon sets!

Jan

I'm not sure I have it anymore. I think it used the bmp.opx, although I'm not sure - it converted .aif files to their constituent .mbm file.

Sorry
Rafe

I don't know if anybody wants to try this (I will when I get time but work is heavy now so I won't be able to mess about for about a week or two), but it may allow us to change the graphics in the mail editor/viewer.

I reckon, based on experience from my old Psion days, that if one was to copy an application from ROM (drive Z) into the D\System\Apps folder, that RAM copy would get precedence.

If this is the case, we can change all the icons and grphics used in the SMS and Mail editor (much in the same way as we can for the FAX viewer and FAX Editor.

Thanks to help in another topic, I know we can copy files from Z\ using Zip Manager.

Has anyone tried this? Did it work?

By mixing this with colour schemes and Loony's excellent menu bar skins, the GUI could be made to look totally different (in some areas).

I know that in the scheme of things, a working 9210 is much more desirable, but why should PocketPC users have all the skins?

Would it not make sense for one person to extract the files, zip the ones of use and store them online in the correct directory structure to be restored to D, that way we will have a base to edit from without us all going away and having to do it.

Tanker,

This isn't true for all files though! For example if u put a startup.mbm on the C drive it won't overrule the original one on Z. Question is ofcourse wich files will work and wich not? I almost know for certain that mbm's on Z cannot be overruled.

Jan

Jan,

I fear that you are right. I was hoping that if an installed application's folder could be moved to D\System\Apps, it would use that (I remember this used to work with Psion apps).

This being the case, I then hoped that the application would look in its own folder for any files it needed.

Even if this is the case, I have found that I cannot open the MBM files from the Z drive since they are not recognised as MBM files.

I think I'll give up on this one, at least I have nice icons on desk and a prettier clock.....

Now what would be nice is if the makers of eExtras were to enable us to assign an icon to their shortuts.

I just got permission from someone to use their Matrix icons for Desk, so that, along with the Matrix backdrop that someone else has done with an appropriate colour scheme may even look nice.
