N70 users on the '3' network in UK, please read.

I have been speaking to a lot of people recently regarding the issue I have been having with my N70 resetting itself randomly. Through a bit of investigation and talks with other N70 users we have been able to narrow the problem down to just being on N70 handsets, in the UK on '3' using Dual (GSM & 3G) mode. I believe it is linked to the fact that N70s on '3' are constantly roaming between networks as they use O2 for GSM connection and '3' for 3G.

I have spoken to over 20 people on '3' who have the problem, and a similar number of people on other networks who say they have never experienced the problem.

Today I found out that Phones4U have been refusing to sell the N70s on '3' contracts because they have had so many people returning the handsets, I believe this is why.

So, N70 users on '3' could you please post your experience regarding this issue, if you have encountered it and how often. What happens is that the screen will go white, then the Nokia logo will appear and the phone will load back up into the home screen, with all applications shut-down, it is often very hard to spot as it makes no sound you will usually just catch it out of the corner of your eye. If you find that whenever you come to use your phone all your applications have been closed, this is probably what has happened, try opening an application in the morning and minimising it, see if it is still running when you go home in the evening, it should be. A lot of people said it happens more often if you are in an area of bad 3G reception, does this tally with your experience?

Finally, could you try putting your phones into GSM only mode (you will need the Generic variant firmware to do this). I have had my phone in GSM only mode for a week now and it has been rock solid, switched it back to Dual mode today, problems started back up immediately.

If I can prove to Nokia enough people are experiencing this then they might do something about it.

Many Thanks.

Seb.

Hi there, got the same issue, my phone keeps resetting itself.
Called "3", they told me to clean battery contacts... Useless.
Also 3G reception is quite bad in my area (Wilts) so when my phone is switching back and forwards all incoming calls go to voicemail.
I am very unhappy with the service but unfortunately way past 14 days cancel period.

Any advice on how to get rid of Three and go back to good old Orange?

Seb,

Whilst I am not on "3" I have also seen the same issue on my N70 whilst roaming between 3G and GSM networks.

I've also seen the same on my previous phone, a Nokia 6630, also whilst roaming between 3G and GSM.

Regards,

Matt.

seriously you dont wanna go on orange with an n70 unless its genric firmware enough people complain about how slow it is with ther 'great' active desktop.
to go on another network you will need to get the unlock code from 3 which they will charge you for & then you will have to contiue paying for your contract since your over your 14 day period.your best choice is to try & get genric firmware(you might have to pay) & stick with gsm service till 3/nokia sort it out.

Seb,

I have a N70, on 3, in UK, and i have not one problem, its solid as a rock, and i've had many smartphones in the past. I am in an area of good 3G coverage, but did have problems with resetting on both 6630 and 6680, 6680 was a particular nightmare, until i got the generic firmware flashed onto the phone.

But like i said, touch wood, no probs with the N70 so far.

Unfortunately this has not solved the problem for me, I have been through three N70 handsets and all firmwares under the sun, still having exactly the same problem. First phone was version 2 firmware ('3' variant), told '3' my phone wasn't working, they sent me out a refurb model with generic version 2 firmware, still the same problem. Told '3' I was distinctly unhappy with receiving a refurb, they sent me another brand new handset, which I have had flashed to the generic version 3 firmware, but I'm still having the same problem. Whatever it is has not been fixed in the latest firmware.
