Is it possible to get a virus on 7650? Has anyone come across one? if they are out there how can we protect against them?
Viruses on 7650???
None has been reported so far, and not likely eigther!
😃
Symbian by its very nature is relatively secure against this sort of thing. Yes it is possible and same old story only put programs on your phone if you trust the source..
Rafe
Not if i heard of that virus attack on javaphone and Symbian OS.
yup, i remembering posting a quite similiar thread when i was a newbie, it was my first post if im not mistaken - and hell i didn't know anything back then about the Symbian OS. and, from what i've learned there, such a thing is unlikely - because the phone's OS is Symbian - simply put. that's why some - if not a lot - of people are having second thoughts about the SPV Orange because it's OS is Microsoft - and the possibility of getting viruses and similar dreaded stuff is more likely!
gee.. hope i made some sense there. 😃
i was thinking about that the other day...
imagine there's a bug in the phone which allows one to send code to a different phone via bluetooth and this code will be executed without any ack from the user...?
it couldspread itself out to other phones using bluetooth searches every minutes.... but what to do with this...? just format the phone or so..? this is nasty...
but how about installing some backdoor-software enabling you to use the other phones memory..? this would be cute... so there is no more 4mb problems... at least for the virus authors... 😊
or what about some sort of bluetooth p2p network setup this way - yes, lacks memory on the 7650... :/
or how about ddos attacks over gprs from all infected phones...? *lol*
are there any more ideas what neat stuff could be done this way...? yes, it's not possible, but think as if would be possible... *lol*
Although the Symbian OS seems relatively secure, that is no reason for complacency. Programs written for the 7650 can access various different areas of the phone - for example, CameraFX can access your images directory, eFileMan can send bluetooth/sms/email/mms and NameSwap can access your Contacts list. If you add all of these together, you (theoretically) have a program that will get each picture in your images dir (you know, the cheeky ones of your girlfriend that even /she/ doesn't know you've got!) and email/mms it to everyone in your address book, and bluetooth it to everyone with a compatible device who is in range. Obviously the user would have to install the program, but who here can say they can verify the authenticity of every program they've installed, however briefly, onto their phone?
This is only one example of what could happen should a malicious coder want to get some revenge on the 7650 community. Hopefully this won't happen for a while yet, but the law of averages when applied to coders states that one day, some one will write a malicious prog for the 7650. So until then, take Rafe's advice.... don't install anything, unless you know where it's from!
Don't you just hate it when you write some long-assed post, then realise you've forgotten to sign in? That's my post up their!
Spikey
thanks, some intersting info there - obviously i now have to go and do some more learning and reading to find out why, as Rafe says:
Symbian by its very nature is relatively secure against this sort of thing
spikeymikes post v intersting too.....
