Anyone know how to synch the N70 to pc PIM, not to outlook

Hello. This is my first post here, so please be gentle.

I have recently gotten my first s60 (or Symbian anything) phone, the lovely Nokia N70. My main reason for getting it was that my SE k700i went belly-up and my old Palm Zire71 has been dying by degrees for over a year. Thus I needed a new good phone, and a PDA-replacement. The N70 seemed to fit my bill 😊

Well, I am really happy with it, except for one thing. I haven't found any way to synchronise it to my pc apps. The software seems all laid-out to synch to outlook, and it probably does that quite well, but I DO NOT use outlook. Outlook is not an option for me.

I use Thunderbird (for mail, so I'd like my contacts to go there), and I've been using Agendus for my scheduling (but I'd be willing to switch to an equally competent, preferrably open-source, package) since that was what I got for my Zire71. Perhaps the new calendar-project (Sunbird, was it?) by the mozilla-guys is an option?

Has anyone got any ideas on how to get the synching to other apps than outlook-and-pals in a WinXP environment? Any of you use GNU/Linux, perhaps, and have some experience that might be pertinent?

For now I am stuck with manually entering my appointments, meetings, etc. into the N70, and it's tiresome and error-prone. I'd appreciate the gurus' help, and thanks in advance for any replies...

The easiest way to do this would be to Sync using a SyncML service. You would Sync your phone via SyncML to a server (e.g. mobical) and then Sync your PIM (Thunderbird etc.) to the server using SyncML. You'll probably need to find a PIM that has SyncML support or has an add on.

See http://sourceforge.net/projects/sync4jmozilla for Thunderbird

Yes, I thought about that but I was hoping there was an easier way. Further I am concerned that some items may not be transferred completely (I've heard contacts can end up losing extra-numbers, attached notes, etc.). Thanks for replying though, as I'm still not happy with the manual-version 😉

No problem. I agree it a big shame there isn't more done for non Outlook users. Of course the newer phones do support variou Push Email system that include sometimes include syncing with other products (e.g. Visto), but that's really for the corporate environment.

I don't use SyncML enough to comment on whether it loses stuff (I still use an outlook Sync as well), although it has worked fine for me as far as I can tell.
