firmware?

In simple terms, software permanently stored within a hardware device as an alternative to hardware circuitry to make it function is called "Firmware". Most devices that have firmware can have it updated(like the cell phones). It may, for example, be stored in EPROM,ROM,etc.
Firmware is safer than software loaded from an alterable medium and more adaptable to change than pure hardware circuitry.
