If there's one thing sure to bring up more questions, gotchas and technical problems in the All About Symbian forums, then it's how memory works on your smartphone. Steve's taken a look at this issue, and his guide to making the most of your memory is essential reading.
Read on in the full article.
nice guide, really 😊
to check the real possiblilty of the phone's ram i recommend to backup all settings on the mmc, remove the mmc, then format the phone and then install appman, fexplorer or taskspy. this shows how much can be free with a clean system 😎
but why shouldn't we use the ram we have? 🙄
after booting i have "only" ~6,42mb free, but only because i have much installed and things like symantec security, logs, menu and phonebook are in my autostart. i think that's much enough to use the phone well. these little applications (messageing, agenda...) still work fine and only thinks like web, netfront or java progs need much more memory. but these big applications also like to have a fast cpu and when my phone's cpu is here at its limit more ram wouldn't help...
yes, my end-user behavior would change, if have would have ram like in the N70 but i can't say that phones like my 6630 or a 6680 aren't usable caused by the lack of ram...
>>> things like symantec security, logs, menu and phonebook are in my autostart
I can understand Symantec s/w auto-starting (though why you'd need it, etc etc...?), but I'm confused by the others. Log, Contacts and the main Menu/App launcher are normal S60 apps and have to be started manually. Or are you saying you've got some kind of third party pre-loader?
Steve
yes i am using a third party pre-loader.
when i close one of these three apps they are only hidden and not closed. so why should i bother myself with a short delay while starting them the first time? ok its not necessary but i like it this way 😉
Care to give more details of the utility? Sounds like you're on the bleeding edge! 8-)

You may want to add that starting up in safe mode prevents some of the behind the scenes apps from opening. Meaning you'll have more free RAM to begin with. I always manage to get cDoom to work via this route on my 6680.

Well, yes, it's a good trick, but something of a last resort, and once you start using the smartphone in earnest, those same background processes and apps will all come into play as normal.
Thanks for the reminder though....

Is the 6680 known to be particularly bad in this regard? It seems worse than my previous 6600. I used to easily run 3+ apps on that without worrying, but with the 6680 I'm lucky if starting a second doesn't cause the first to shut down.
My most used app is FreeNews which is Java, I can run something light like HandyReversi at the same time while waiting for it to update. But starting up something larger like FrozenBubble can bring it to a crawl.
If anything the 6680 is less usable than the 6600 was.
The most annoying thing is when you take a picture, but it doesn't have enough memory to store the result to the memory card.

As mentioned in my article, just running up a Java app will grab 5MB of RAM, so that'll do it every time. If you want to carry on using FreeNews, best to upgrade to the N70! 8-)
I REALLY wish Nokia would publicise the fact that running Java apps will savage normal operation of this smartphone....
Anyone know of a native Symbian newsreader app?
