Where have all the 9500s gone?

To replace my worn-out 9500 dating from November 2004, I have tried to buy a replacement 9500 with 5.22, or thereabouts, firmware. As far as I can tell no-one has the 9500 in stock (except the odd old model sitting in high-street-shop store cupboards) and there is no info about when it will be available.

This even applies to Carphonewarehouse.com, nokia.co.uk's chosen online retailer, who cannot promise they are getting them in again. Orange and O2 9500s are described on a number of web sites as "discontinued".

Does this mean that Nokia are trying to correct the reported problems with the recent firmware, or is it perhaps true that a new Communicator is on the way? Nokia weren't so quick with a new model last time round though, were they? Could there be another stop-gap model in the offing, like the 9210i, which was a considerable improvement on the 9210.

I've found the same problem, there are basically no more being made. I expect a 9500i, if anything until the next gen. I do know that Nokia had a falling out with Vodafone over the 9500's problems.

Still, it's a communicator with WiFi and a camera, which is all I wanted 😊

That's interesting, Ian - mine is a Vodafone, or at least was until this afternoon it decided to go into white screen mode, never (so far) to recover. Whether it is totally dead or not I will only be able to tell when I find my cable try to see if there is any sign of life or files in there (bluetooth doesn't work). If any one has any advice it would be appreciated!

A bit off topic, but... "worn-out"??? Wow, in a year? What are you using it for? Self defence?

Mine is from 2004 as well - still working fine and I use it quite extensively. I dont expect it to ever be replaced due to wear and tear. Usually I will retire a phone because a newer and better comes out... not because the old one breaks.

I would guess it because the 9300i may be seen as a bit of a replacement. That said there could be a last ever S80 device on the way.

I believe I'm right in saying that the intention was to stop development on S80 and focus it on S60 (although it should be noted it will probably have to wait for full touchscreen support in S60, and possible support for the landscape screne size).

Was just thinking and wondering the same myself.
Don't think it was ever available from Vodaphone, and now no longer available from O2 either.

Expansys usually have this sort of thing, SIM-free.

But yes, I've noticed that it's getting harder and harder to find the 9500 anywhere, too. Great shame, as I still don't like the 9300's hard-keyboard, tiny-joystick form factor....

Yes, it was available on Vodafone, I got mine in December 04.

And as far as the dude who's phones never break, I've got to ask: how do you manage that? Every single nokia phone I've ever owned has broken down after between 18 and 24 months of use. That's the 9100, 8800, and 9210i. I guess I drop them occasionally... but nothing too serious.

S90 fits your descrition pretty well and exists already in the 7710....

On the 9500?

Go to the log (press the "Menu" button, choose "Tools" and then "Log" or press <shift> + <ctrl> + L).

Press "Menu" again and select "Tools" and then "Clear log" (alternatively press <ctrl> + D)

That should do it, do it...

Yeah, I guess 😊

This is quite surprising to me, since one of my reasons for liking Nokia is the overall high quality and stability of the devices.

I have never had a Nokia just "breaking". I've killed quite a few, and so have the kids (mostly in connection with water or severe mechanical trauma), but only in ways that the phones werent built for anyway.

As far as how I manage to keep my 9500 alive.... well, its mostly about not treating it like a normal phone really, because it isnt one. It is more like a very small connected laptop. Thus I keep it in a leather pouch when it is not in use (the Nokia CP-61) - even when it is in my pocket. In the pouch it can potentially survive a drop to the floor, though I havent tested that.

I have a "normal" phone too - a Nokia 6230 - that just gets unceremonially shoved in the pocket with coins, keys and lint... left on the table between coke cans and candy wrappers.... if somebody calls and asks for my girlfriend, I will usually throw her the phone rather than getting up and bringing it.... and so on.

My 9500 could never survive the treatment that my 6230 gets, and I wouldnt expect it to - it wasnt built for it. I dont play frisbee with my laptop either 😉

Oh, indeed. Think of your smartphone as 500 worth of cutting edge technology and not a cheap commodity plastic thing!
