The Ultimate Spring Clean
This makes me laugh. A few weeks ago someone was criticising the Microsoft phone OS because they had 'heard' that it needed maintenance and lauding Symbian for the fact it didn't.
I think the difference might be the length between spring cleans. It does largely depend on how hard you push your device too of course. No system is perfact and even just from regular use space get used up (e.g. many installed applications will create a few files in C:/system/apps/appanme even when installed to the mmc to store configuration settings etc.
One issue I have hd is that failed sis installs (or interupted ones) can leave a sis file left behind in c:/system/installs think that's right]. Usually this is deleted on a sucessful install.
Yes, to put things in perspective, this was to clean up a YEAR's worth of trial software and beta testing detritus. And I didn't even HAVE to do it - the device was working fine as it was. I just thought it would be an interesting exercise to go through.

could you use appman by symbianWare(i think). to do that for you & it would tka elike 10 mins tops depending on how much crap yopu had on your device

How would that help you clear the megabytes from the \system folder?

befcause theres a section on it to get rid of debirs from left over apps
That'll clear a few small ini files etc. I doubt it will do anything for leftover libraries, codecs, orphaned mail files, OS temporary files, and so on.
