Firmware upgrading problems

I've got an Orange branded N70

Wanted to get the firmaware upgraded to loose the Orange junk more than anything.

I went to Carphone Warehouse (New St, Birmingham) only to be told that they wouldn't touch it 'cos Orange would get upset with them.

So I phoned Intercity Mobile Communications, the only other Nokia repairer in central Birmingham. The chap I spoke to said they'd do it.

So I went in to be told that they couldn't change the firmware to generic 'cos the phone was Orange branded & needed the Orange software to even boot up.

Is this true?

a bunch of lying wankers? (btw, if anyone here's from them, would you care to explain why I had a wasted journey?), or are they under pressure from Orange?

Anyone have any details of places near Birmingham that DO do this to Orange N70s?

The hardware accepts generic/retail firmware just fine (there is no special hardware for Orange branded devices vs. retail, they're all the same, except for the software/firmware).

It IS possible to load generic firmware onto an Orange N70 - I've had it done on mine!

The problem is that some service centres won't unbrand the phone just incase something goes wrong, apparently it's "awkward" to send a phone back to Nokia if it's a branded one with a failed generic flash on it.
