Nokia N70 process list

Hi! First post and new to Symbian as well, so please bear with me!

I've got a feeling my phone's been messed about with. I was daft enough to turn on my bluetooth to allow some mates to send me ringtones. I turned bluetooth on for about 15 minutes, remembered turn it off afterwards, didn't think much of it until I looked at the phone's PacketData logs later on. Basically they don't exist until the 23rd onwards (this exchange happened at about 10:30pm on the 22nd), but it says in a menu that the logs are saved for 30 days. There's only a week's worth there. I've discovered FExplorer (good app) and also TaskSpy and it's slowly dawned on me that what I thought was a simple little device for making phone calls on the move is actually an unprotected, un-firewalled, Sun OS-powered, four logical drive packing, hidden system folders having, hackable mini PC with soft reset, hard reset, safe mode and offline mode 😮

Basically FExplorer shows 83 processes when the phone has booted up, which seems a lot to me (although I've no experience of this OS admittedly) and I don't know what they are :con?

There's three instances of Push To Talk running (which as far as I knew I wasn't subscribed to), there are files I can't view in FExplorer with the hex viewer (it says -14 error), unsigned apps installed on it I knew nothing about, apps which you can't kill or are recreated by others, data connection logger, security observer, SYSTEMAMS (3 at least), sdpserver, WIMSERVER, PENGSERVER, dataconnectionlogger, schexe, agsvexe, btmanserver, ALWAYSONLINESTARTER, SharedDataServer, the list goes on :con?

The deleted logs thing makes me fairly certain someone's uploaded something intriguing and tried to hide their tracks. I'm just wondering if this sort of thing goes on a lot for a bit of a laugh, or maybe if he's nicking my free GPS allocation which I generally don't use), or if he's cloned it lock stock from the IMEI and my next bill might justify actual usage of a gun or two 🙄

(Awaits first RTFM-type response) ~cringe~ :lol

Eh? Symbian OS doesn't need a firewall in the traditional sense - ports are closed unless specifically opened. And viruses can't auto-install etc.

There are loads of processes in any modern OS, my N70 has about 80 as well. If you're worried about any rogues having been inserted, watch for unexplained packet data or Bluetooth activity. Any malware will try to dial out, as it were. If all is quiet then there's not a problem.

Accepting a few ringtones shouldn't have been a problem. If something executable got passed over, you'd have had to accept several 'Are you sure' questions at install time.....

Everything you have described sounds absolutely normal for a Symbian phone!

It's really surprising how many processes are actually running on the phone, SYSTEMAMS is one of the main system processes, it's not unusual to have more than one. All the others are to perform all the mundane tasks the phone has to do in order to make it 'smart', like keep track of calendar events, alarms, share data between applications, make sure its ready to play your MP3 ringtone the moment a call comes in, each thing requires a task!

I wouldn't worry about any of it, it's highly unlikely you have received anything untoward over Bluetooth, there are bluetooth viruses in existence but they are very rare and if you are paranoid you can get Norton Anitvirus for your phone!

This is the reason Nokia don't install task and file-managers by default, it just worries people!

Since it was the first time I've paired devices with another phone it was all new to me to be honest, but I do remember the phone asking me if it was OK to pair with his phone and 'message received' when he sent each ringtone. I did have Symantec Antivirus free from Orange on my memory card but uninstalled it because it wouldn't co-exist with another AV application I wanted to try and later on I formatted my memory card when I started panicking lol It didn't pick anything up and neither did the other one so I guess I'm worrying about nothing.

Anyway, that's a relief, and at least it made me more aware of Symbian which is quite cool and encouraged me to see just what the N70 can do so that's good 😊

Cheers for the info guys! 😊

Can anyone tell me what the process npaprivlistener does? Better still, is there anywhere on the web where I can learn about the different processes running on my phone?
