Ever helpful, Ewan has prepared a quick reference guide to the brand new Symbian OS powered smartphones that are specifically aimed at music playback, with comparison to the ubiquitous iPod. Food for thought, though don't forget that almost any recent Symbian OS device can also play back stereo music too...

Interesting table that. At first glance I would look at those devices and instantly lean towards the SonyEricsson. The form factor, the touch screen, UIQ and the apparant Sony "know-how" when it comes to portable music. But, closer inspection via the table shows it to be a bit limited.

For me, the lack of WMA immeadiately eliminates it as I have about 250 CD's ripped to WMA and I would rather rip out my own eye's than rip that lot again.

But it's the lack of a remote conrol that really stands out as a "HELLO!!! DID ANYONE AT SE ACTUALLY TRY USING THE THING?????". Do they expect people to walk around proudly cradling the thing in the palm of their hands like those awful iPod adverts? They only do that in the ads so that you can see the device you know! In the real world people stick these things in their pockets/handbags and they don't want to have to fish them out just to change the volume becuase the current track is much quieter/louder than the last.

Still, at least they all accept 3.5mm headphones, a trick the HTC made WM5 devices seem to have missed.

i believe the Sony Ericsson W950i UIQ 3 does not have slot for external memory. same like Nokia N91. the sony memory stick micro (m2) is used by SE M600 UIQ 3, not W950.

Rgds

yep, no memory stick on the uiq, have edited the table.

As to linear magnetic tape, again, myidea. Glad you liked it.
