Where do we go from here?

This thread included a poll: What do you currently use and what do you hope to be using in 6 months time?

With all the new Nseries and Eseries S60 smartphones coming onstream in the next quarter, with UIQ 3 devices still.... err.... coming soon, with Series 80 only living on in the 9300i and with Series 90 (what's that, I hear you say?) looking even more dead in the water, I thought it appropriate to take stock. Read on to take part in our unofficial poll...

At AllAboutSymbian (and with my other hats on, for PDAE and Palmtop User magazines and for 3-Lib), I/we try to cover all the different aspects of the Symbian world. But are you, the site visitors, actually using what we're writing about? Are we missing the mark? Have we lost the plot?

If you can spare one minute, could you fill in the quick poll below? And no trying to skew the results by posting more than once, please, we'll be checking those IP logs!

Thanks. Let's see how the Symbian world looks now and how it might look in a year's time.

Still using my Sendo X (the N70 was the only phone that came close to be good enough to replace it but then Nokia annouced the E series; waiting for the E61 now). So i can't take part in your poll.

What about splitting it into 2 questions:
1) What are you currently using? (include series 60 0.9 and 1.2)
2) Are you planning to upgrade within the next 6 months (and what are you going to buy)?

That'll make it a lot less confusing and cover everybody. Then you can do some clever annalysis on the results to make sense of them

Wanted 2 questions, but the poll software on AAS only allowed me one! And I didn't want to confuse things by splitting the poll across two threads.... 8-)

Anyway, you can tick choice 8!!!

Steve

I was still using N-Gage two months ago until it broke down.

I bought a Nokia 6630 to replace it for a while.

I'm going to get E61 as soon as it's commercially available in Finland which should be week 19/2006. So I will be one of Nokia's external beta testers for E61 😉

Understand better now. Splitting across 2 thread would indeed be more confusing and be no good anyway since i guess that one of the objective of this poll is to determine whether series 80 and UIQ users are going to migrate to series 60.

My landscape:
1) had a p910, was VERY happy with it, was stolen last year :frown:
2)went back to using a s40 nokia 6230 until august last year when I bought a nokia 6681. Not quite a 'power user' smartphone, but nice to play with regardless.
3)Going to the dark side, and get a Qtek 9090 (Windows Mobile 2003SE), only because we (the office) are switching mobile operators and got those for free!

Considerations:
I) Would be glad to get any Sony Ericsson Symbian smartphone post-p910, preferably P990.

II) It just boggles my mind why Nokia STILL hasn't made any touchscreen device. That would, in my opinion, put S60 in a position to become the de-facto standard UI for Symbian.

III) S90 is officially dead, Nokia already said it is going to fold its fetaures in S60. The missing feature is touchscreen (anything else I forgot?).

IV) I believe S80 is going the way of the do-do too, in favor of S60.

I am currently use a WM2003SE phone and plan to switch to a Nokia N80, a Nokia N93 and a HTC Hermes (PPC device) within the next 6 months. Plan to use VoIP over WLAN, unlimited 3G for streaming media from my home PC and extensive 'Office' use although integration with Exchange on the Symbian devices would be nice, hopefully relegating my laptop to a stay at home/in the office device. Might have to drop my N93 plans but I would be tempted to buy it as a DVCam IF it performs reasonably. All very exciting.

The poll seems to assume everyone who might be interested already uses a Symbian OS phone, surely the future is with those that don't but might.

Since I retired my Ngage I have been using an SE750i but will be returning to Symbian with my next device. Not sure what it will be yet but it will have to replace my camera, pda and music player (or at least by the preferred option) and have a touch screen.

There is no option "currently using a S60 device, planning to move to UIQ 3 based device... Perhaps pointing out the S60 focused portal?

Well, if anyone who was going to vote for 'any other plans' wants to even things out - could you vote for using a non-symbian device and planning to move in the next 6 months for me please - option wasn't available when I voted.

Added an option for S60 -> UIQ 3 - though honestly because the UIQ devices are a bit further off I don't imagine many people will have decided to do this yet.

Brazilian Joe - you will have to wait till next year for an S60 touch screen device.

Yes S80 development is stopping. But I think we'll see an S60 communicator style device before too long.

S90 is defintely dead - the bits are being integrated into S60, or rather S60 is adding the stuff necessary to do S90's job.

I have a 2nd Edition device (Nokia 6600) and plan to upgrade to another 2nd Edition device later in the year. I couldn't find this option in the poll though.

That counts as staying with S60 2nd edition.

Steve

I voted for: Currently use S60 2nd edition device, planning to stay with it (or upgrade to 2nd Edition) 😊

As I got my trusty N70 last Nov 05 and will stick with it for a while to come. :icon14: 😎

But if I had the chance I would have voted for: Currently use S60 2nd edition device, planning to upgrade to 4th edition within 18 months  😉

Heh, well hopefull that S60v4 will be out in that time but on average I tend to keep my handsets between 2 to 3 years.

9300 now.
Need faster & more interoperable web browser, so must go elsewhere, I fear. Hope Linux will be practical for me.

The 9300 has a particularly poor browser doesn't it? What about a Windows PPC or Mini PDA? Pocket IE is pretty good.

I need to vote multiple times, as I plan to upgrade to Series 60 v3 and to UIQ 3 once devices become available.

For now, I'm using both S60 v1.2 (Sendo X) and Series 60 v2 (N70)

Just found your poll. You didn't keep it open very long did you! Still, you now have the opinion of those who read AAS daily. As for those who don't . . .Well, you might have got a more balanced response if we'd been included but then maybe not.

We kept it open as long as the poll story was 'featured' on the front page (about 48 hours). The responses had been declining in frequency quite a lot anyway.

It was only a snapshot, if Rafe can get something more sophisticated online we could do a better poll with multiple questions - and leave it running for a week or two at least. Rafe?

As I'm fairly new to S60... got my N70 back in October, I was a little alarmed when I found out that Symbian v9 was around the corner. But I'm sticking with my N70 for two reasons. One, I have already invested in a lot of software not available for S60 v3 so right now it just make sense for me. And two, none of the S60 v3 devices really are what I'm looking for. N80, too thick, not a slider fan. N73, very cool but missing WiFi for VoIP (that's a big selling point I think in the future.) E70, I love the 6800-like feel, but camera has no flash (maybe it doesn't matter) and it's a little bigger than my N70. E60/61, slick, but no camera... but the 60 is really nice and thin. N9x, just too big... the 93 is really awesome for all it can do; it's like my PowerBook in my pocket. So, I'll wait to see what the next nifty Nokia N-series will be... I'm in no rush. :icon14:

Yes, tempting though it is to try and make one of these shiny new prototypes my main smartphone (if only for a while), the harsh reality that none of my 30 or so third party apps will run yet means that I'm staying with the N70 too.... I think it'll take several months more before even half my apps are ported to S60 3rd edition. Roll on late summer! 8-)

i think that the whole symbian singed thi9nk will drive most of the developers away especially the freeware developers(unless thier really dedicated) & that most of the freeware apps the deleoper is unknown(well unknowm fo rme)

& n93 is on my shopping list
