installation error in n80

Did you receive an operator memory card and swap if for you own? If so, perhaps the operator firmware is trying to install an application from the memory card which obviously isn't present on yours?

Maybe the card is corrupt or was formatted, in which case the same may still apply. Might be worth contacting your operator and saying you think there is a problem with your memory card?

I have an unlocked and unbranded N80, and I have the same installation problem. Any ideas?

I just got my unlocked phone as well and continue to get the same message. Memory card icon under "Tools" indicates that 1648kb are being used, but the card and phone are brank new.

Have you tried formatting the card in the device?

I tried formatting and it says

'Unable to format. Memory card in Use by another application!'

I tried restarting the phone and doing it too. Any suggestions?

Ohh this totally sucks. I came here with exactly the same problem. Two problems actually.

PROBLEM 1 I tried to get rid of my operator's AirAlbum because my parallel-import N80 doesn't seem to be installing it and besides, I didn't need it.

First of all, it wouldn't install the files. It would automaticaly try to install everytime I restart the phone and then I'd get a similar message to the rest of you: Unable to complete installation from memory card. To install the remaining applications, please go to Application Manager.

The files are in *.sis format in the App Manager and indicate that they are on the miniSD. If I try to manually install it, I get the Unable to Complete Installation error.

I actually went into the file system and found the files under the RESOURCES folder in the mem card. You can't normally see it if you use the phone's File Mgr but you can if you hook it up to ur USB cable and use the N80 as an external mass storage drive.

I deleted all the files there (after backing them up) and went into the App manager again...and the SAME files are STILL there. Now, of course, nothing happens when I try to install them. I don't even get an error message.

PROBLEM 2 So fine, if I can't get rid of the apps, maybe I'll load some of my own. I tried using PC Suite to transfer some games (sis files) using the Application Installer. Then it says "finish installation on the phone" while on the phone it says "Installation of *.sis not supported".

Are the games compatible with 3rd edition Symbian?

This is starting to sound like a common problem - could it be to do with the application signing needed by 3rd edition?

I've got exactly the same problem here. Same message on startup, but nothing apparent on the card. And at the same time it's impossible to format the card. What to do?

If you go to the Manager applications (found under Tools) you get a list of installed applications and available installation files. You should be able to install the files your phone is trying to install from here (if you have problems see below) OR you can delete them. At a guess I would say it is programs like Catalogs / Mobile Search / Nokia Games etc.

If you are having trouble installing programs (.sis files) you need to make sure that they are compatiable (S60 3rd Edition / N80) and you need to make sure you have the settings in your phone configured to allow software installation.

In App Manager go to settings and make sure 'Software Installation' is set to 'All and Online cerif check' is off.

Note some have reported variations on this dialog (e.g. Options -> Defintion -> Allows software install -> set yes). The tick is to make sure software installation is set to yes.

Thanks rafe, but I tried that already. Deleting the un-installable programs was the first thing I tried to do but nothing happens when you hit the "C" key. I went intot he root directory to manually delete the files but still the installation files stubbornly appear under App Mgr. only this time nothing happens when you try to install them.

As for the programs, I feel that they were not compatible with S60 V3 as I'd already made sure the cert check was off and software installation set to "all".

Hmm sorry that didn't help. You might need to remove the stubs to get them out of app manager, but you're not going to get near the stubs without a full file manager (C:/system/data/installs) I think though that may be different on s60 3rd edition.

Same here! I can install java apps but no symbian apps.

The "unable to install" error I was getting has been solved. I went out and bought a new 512 miniSD, and the message is gone. Maybe there is something we don't know about where the unlocked phones come from, and what was originally installed on the 128 card. Whatever the case, I have benn able to transfer files directly from my Mac using the USB cable once I switched to a new card. When I used the 128 card with the error message this transfer was not possible.

I think it's the 3rd edition causing the problem. If you try installing apps on other phones such as the n70, it says it's not "certified" or something along those lines, and then you continue to install the application. With the 3rd series I think Nokia has to certify the program with their certificate which costs quite a bit.

roxxy - probably worth double checking your settings for installing software. And it must be compatiable software.

Oh is it called a stub? That must be it. That's how I got rid of the actual files, by selecting Data Transfer when prompted, and used normal windows explorer to root out the files. And yet! The stubs are still there.

Since then I've tried to use the phone once again as for Data Transfer but I always get 'Unable to use Data Transfer. Memory card in Use by another application!'

Thanks for the suggestions although nothing did the trick. But I solved it by getting a new memory card. No trouble now.
