Orange influence on N80??

7 replies · 3,209 views · Started 17 May 2006

I've switched from Vodafone to Orange as the N80 was free on a deal. It's not going to be arriving for a few days.
I forgot Orange like to 'enhance' devices with their own Home screen. Does anyone know if this is the case with the N80 and if it's possible to turn it off and have the standard S60 Nokia one??

Cheers

I haven't seen the new Orange N80 yet. However it depends on whether it is running the new version of the homescreen. If it is then yes it should be possible to turn it off. (and a new version seems likely given the change in OS).

I'm holding an Orange N80 that I received today. It doesn't look *too* branded, just an Orange app called "Photography" that apparently lets you upload pictures to a web gallery.

The home screen says "Orange" at the top and has a clock, below that are six icons: Photography; Contacts; New text msg; Services; Music player; Gallery.

One thing I noticed is that the web browser you get when choosing "Services" is not the new Nokia all-singing all-dancing one. For that you have to go to Menu->My Own->Web.

I haven't quite got the WiFi figured out yet either...

The WiFi's pretty straightforward (granted it took me a couple of hours to figure out, but then I'm fresh from Windows Mobile 5).
Once you've defined your Access Point (under Tools - Settings - Connection) you can then set the web browser / email / other app to ask which access point you wish to connect to each time they are launched.
My biggest hassle was finding the MAC address of the phone for my home network's filter list - I didn't realise the key code for this was contained in the phone manual. (It's *#62209526# for anyone who needs it).

I am slightly disappointed with the email settings - it limits user defined ports to 3 figures only which prevents me from sending mail via my domain, but other than that everything's rosy so far..

posted this elsewhere, but you can turn off icons along screen by going to tools-settings-phone-standby mode- disable active standby.

I'm hoping some clever bod will design a skin so we can choose what icons to have. Not sure if its possible to customise the ones on it, if it is the option is well buried.

I know orange want us to pay for their photo service, but its a tad synical to lock it into a homescreen.🙄

You can choose what icons to have on the "active standby" / home screen by going to tools -> settings -> phone -> standby mode -> active standby apps.

thanks for that. feeling a tad dumb now. makes it much more useful.:icon14:

Said this on the other thread, but there is no Orange homescreen on the N80 - just got mine and they are factory standard (for the time being at least).
