PDA and smartphone input speeds compared

A perennial source of debate and, quite obviously, a major contributing factor in determining which smartphone you save up for, Steve gets out his stop watch and reports, once and for all, on the relative text input speeds for the various device types on the market.

Read on in the full article.

When I read your article my spontaneous reaction to your time for the SE P900 was: "Can it be that stylus input using the virtual keyboard really is so slow, compared with real keyboards?"

I always had the impression that writing with the stylus is pretty fast. So I checked myself, and I can confirm your P900 time...

Surprising, to me at least.

Steve, I think you ought to add input speeds for bluetooth keyboards. People who really do need to type lots on their smartphone/PDA would probably be best advised to get one of these, and it also allows people to buy whichever model suits them best for other reasons without sacrificing typing speed/comfort.

Steve,

First off - you are totally right about the real leader in this contest - no surprise: Series 5mx!

I think, though you should have used a P910. There is no way a S60 phone - even with "smart text" can beat any instrument with a qwerty keyboard - even if said keyboard is liliputian in size as is the P910's.

A Series 5 - or 3 - keyboard it is not - and, had I your collection I would repeat the tests - but I imagine that a P910 would handily trounce a non-keyboarded instrument.

Cheers,

Richard

I could type _a lot_ faster on my Pxxx using the virtual keyboard than I can on a N70 using T9.

krisse - I cover Bluetooth keyboards in the text. There's no point in including them in the tabel, as all the devices would then have the same score!! On a BT keyboard, there's no reason why we can't all type at 50wpm, for example.

dgduris - yes, I suspect the P910's thumb keyboard wouldn't be much slower than the Nokia E61

Raven - go on then, do my test sentences. I challenge you to a T9 versus P9xx stylus race! 8-)

First of all, congratulations. This is the article I've waited for. However, being indeterminded whether to wait for the Nokia E70 or to go for the E61, I miss the Nokia 6820 in this list. Its folded keyboard strongly resembles to that of the E70. It would be nice to know how it compares to the others.

Er... the 6820? This is a Symbian site! 8-) The 6820 isn't a S60 smartphone - steer clear of it. It's to the E70 what a gnat is to a dinosaur.

Steve

Sure, it isn't a smartphone and of course I'd prefer to have the E70 in this list, but as long as it's not out the 6820 would serve just fine as a replacement. I mean, the focus of Your article are the variuos input methods and not the OS 😉 Using your argumentation, the 5mx to the others is what the ENIAC is to a pocket calculator :>
