Nokia N80 transfering SMS message to it from a 6230I ?

Hi all,

Took the plunge and went for the Nokia N80 on orange.

So far like the phone and doesn't seem as buggy as other phones I've had
when they first come out.

My only problem is I want to transfer some old SMS messages from my 6230i.

Now I can transfer them off the 6230i using PC suite, but when I try and
transfer then to the N80 messages section
the only folder I can put them in is drafts, I also can't see the my folder
section under messages to copy them there.
( Am I looking in the wrong place ? )

If I copy them onto the memory card as a file the phone can't open them.

Was gonna try using "Oxygen Phone Manager II for Symbian OS phones" but
doesn't yet show the N80 as supported and
am not sure it will do what I want.

Any suggestions ( polite ones only please 😊

Have also tried Fexplore but that won't load on N80

With Oxygen Phone Manager II you will be able to transfer the messages only in text file format. For this you may use Oxygen Phone Manager II for Nokia Phones trial version to be able to raed the data from your phone Nokia 6230i. You may download it from Oxygen Software official Site. Then you should export the messages to some text file format and then with the standard service of Bluetooth connectivity.
The phone N80 is planned to be supported at the end of June.

If your last phone was on orange and you have just moved the sim so to speak you could try saving the sms to simcard , banging it in the N80 and reading the simcard from the sms app, apologies if this wont work because of locks etc but i am fortunate that mine is unlocked 😊

(I mean banging it into the N80 in the gentlest way possible with a new phone )😊

Hth

Thanks for that I have an older version of Oxygen Phone Manager and have managed to copy the messages off the phone, look like I may have to wait untill june before transfering them to the new phone.

Have also tried Sexplorer which allow me to access to files on the phone except /sys and /private which is where I'm imaging the messages are stored !!

?? Does any one know of any other software that can do this ??

When I first got the phone I put my old SIM in there and it allowed me to copy over the contacts, unfortunately when I go into messages none of the messges on the SIM appear, but thanks for the suggestion.

Does anyone have any other idea ?

I have been trying this other the last couple of days, from the message store of over 2000 texts on an 6600 to the N80,

6600:
Make sure texts are saved to phone memory, if your are currently saved to phone memory, then change message store to mem card, this transfers them over to mem card and stores them in E:\System\Mail , then various subfolders, most of the message base is in folder entitled 00001001_S, then in subfolders named from 0 through 9, then A through to F, copy the whole mail folder and index file directly to your computer

N80:
With a card reader put the files you copied above onto the N80 mem card, they go in the E:\Private\mail2 directory with the same format as above, put mem card back in phone and turn off then on, you should then go to phoen message base and switch to mem card store, it should then ask if ya waana copy messages, it will then you should see all your old messages.

hope this helps

Unfortunately as my old phone is a 6230I, it doesn't allow the storing of messages on the memory.

But thanks for the idea.

On the N80 tried changing the message memory to the memory card, removed the card and plugged it into the PC card reader, I was able to see and access the file structure you mentioned and copy a test message across, renamed it so it had the same format as the other message names.

When I plugged the card in I could not see the test message only the other ones.

Also beginning to suspect that the VMG files have different formats, if I open a message from each phone in a text editor the format looks completely different.

There must be someone somewhere who's managed to do this, I just can't find them !!

I tried the following, according to the instructions, but to no avail. Any chance you may be able to be more specific, or have any idea why it doesn't work for me? The files are all copied to the folder as spefified below, but the N80 doesn't find them in the Messaging app.

Any help would be great.

Thanks,
Lars

Hi Jimi,

You'll need to either connect in data transfer mode, or use additional third party software in order to see the Private folder, as it is hidden by default and hidden folders are not shown in PC Suite.

Hi Lars,

Thanks I'll give the data transfer another try, I couldn't get it to work last time.

Can you recommend any kind of software I can use??

thanks

Jimi

Good way is using Nokia PCSuite - Phone Browser - Messages. The private folder, is passed to inbox.

I have the same problem with my N71 phone.
I transferred all my sms from my 6600 to my PC via card reader and then to the respective mail files but the phone does not recognize them, nor did it ask me to copy the messages when I switched the mail properties back to the phone memory. Can someone please tell me why or what I can do? Maybe there is another program that can read the messages???

Hi,
I received my n80 on Orange, used the n80 transfer thing and it copied across all my messages as well as contacts...i then restored from a backup from the 6230i using pc suite to get all my pics etc. All went ok, EXCEPT duplicate entries for contacts! I have gone through using pc suite and removed all duplicate entries but my inbox still shows the number rather than contact 😡 ...help!!!

Apart from that, the sliding unlocking the phone and the camera unprotected...nice phone! :icon14:

( i tried mlock and autolock but both unlock the phone on sliding-not ideal as sliding is too lose for my like,if anyone knows how to tighten this I would love to here from you)
