N80 randomly establishing GPRS connection

12 replies · 7,890 views · Started 22 May 2006

I have the GPRS setting on my N80 set to "when needed", i.e. it should only establish a connection when I open the WAP browser, or receive an incming MMS.

However I have noticed over the past week or so that I have had it, that it will occassionally open a GPRS connection for no reason. When I look at the connection in the connection manager it shows either no or very little data being sent or received (typically around 40 bytes) so I don't know why this is happening.

The connection that it opens is the default 'Orange Internet' GPRS access point, but I cannot go into that access point and look at the settings as it has been protected somehow by Orange (there is a little padlock next to the name of the access point).

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this, or any solution? Luckily there's hardly any data being transmitted so it's not costing me anything, but it is annoying.

My N80 on Orange did the same thing.

Go to Under Settings > Connection > Packet Data.
Set Packet Data Conn. to "When Needed"
Clear the access point (set "orangeinternet" to blank).

This should stop it connecting randomly, but doesn't affecting connecting through WAP when you need to use it.

Hmm.. I've just noticed the

arrows under my signal bar again... Still seems to be connecting randomly, but not transferring anything. 😡

Ring Orange and they can send a update to the phone to stop the connnection i read somewhere else.

Have done what was said about access point setting to none but still connection is on unless using the red key any other ideas ??

This seems to be embeded in the Orange firmware. I had a sim free before I got my orange.

Ive just flashed my orange with the new firmware which is generic and no more GPRS connections!

I have just set the packet data to "When Needed" (left the other field as "orangeinternet"😉 and I don't get any connections unless I specifically start one. Not sure why it isn't working on other phones unles there is some background task trying to get a connection.

Hi All

Got my bill from Orange and there was a £56 charge for WAP which I have not used.😡 After loads of time talking to Orange it was discovered that they have a problem. Other pay monthly customers have also been charged for WAP which they have not used. They are going to adjust all the bills
My N80 seems to connect whenever I make a call. I need to hold down the red button to cancel packet sending even though I have my setting to "when needed" I still have to manually stop this from happening every time I make a call.
Nokia are aware of this Orange problem. There is no way to delete the Orange Access Point it is protected (they have taken a leaf from Microsoft..you must have their software).:icon13:
Orange have told me they have disabled this feature from their end...we will see. Anyone else had this WAP charge problem?

Hi All

Okay...so I got my Orange bill...this month... 260!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😡
To cut a long story short...every time I took a photo it was being uploaded to Orange. This option was on automatically...but they don't tell you that. I thought it was being uploaded to my phone album (okay so I'm not totally savvy in these matters).
Have contacted Orange. This seems to be a common problem. I was told how to turn off upload and was told my bill will be recalculated. Watch this space.

Thats pretty shocking. I guess they're trying to turn the N80 in to a push like device like the sidekick or something, without thinking about the extra costs. Bonus for them I guess, until everyone complains. You have a right to complain make sure you get every penny back.

Orange seem to think they are pretty smart for all their extra firmware updates, but there have been enough people around with problems.

---- edit ----

I just spoke to my friend who works at Orange. He said the messages are supposed to be free, but they are having billing issues. He himself recently refunded someone over £300 for that exact same issue, and he said that the issue itself is "being worked on", you should be able to get your money back pretty easily, it is a known issue.

Ive had a Similar problem on Vodafone UK.... Slightly differs from yours though.

I have my N80 set to connect using a pre-defined WiFi Access point. So whilst im at home it uses my own Internet over wifi. Yet sometimes whilst loading webbrowser, I have noticed the 3G <--> symbol go solid (connected)...

Randomly it was using Vodafone Internet instead of wireless and not telling me.

I recieved my bill.... 96..... most of which was internet charges! 2.90 a MB they charge... ridiculous.

Anyway.... spoke to customer support manager and got all money back... and a replacement handset that doesnt seem to have the same problem.
