Good article by Carlo over at MobHappy, criticising the hype and lack of forethought that's gone into the creation of the new .mobi Internet domain. Interesting reading and I agree 100%. More domains = more confusion = less customers/readers.

Nothing to worry about with .mobi, it'll be one of those extensions that never gets past the few coperations that back it (Vodafone etc) and the domain speculators.
I expect the lauch to be the same as the recent .eu launch, all of the generic and even half generic domains will be snapped up by scripts on "landrush", those domains will never get used, nobody will want to register the variations of what's left so the extension never really gets used in the "real world" so people forget about it.
This happens with every "major" extension launch and will continue to do so whilst ICANN control things along with Verisign.
I've seen this happen time and time again with various other extensions.
Completely agree. Hopefully it does not take many more useless TLD's until everybody understands: The only people ever to profit from this are the registrars and maybe a handful of domain grabbers.
Actual influence on the future development of the Internet, whether "mobile" or not: tending - heavily - towards zero.
when I first heard about .mobi, I thought it was a good idea, but reading that article, I see how it is possibly flawed. The idea of having multiple css style sheets that are dependant on browser seems like a good alternative. At the end of the day, for me at least, i want to know I have access to all the information on the internet more than having it look as good as it can on a small screen. (Of course I want it to look good, but readable is a good start)
If I use a search engine looking up something on a phone, I don't want to be delivered info thats only accessible on a big screen. The same info with a different style sheet sounds like a good alternative to me.
