N80 Faults....

13 replies · 4,971 views · Started 29 May 2006

I've been having loads and loads of problems with my N80, just wondering if anyone has been having the same trouble?

Bought it on 16th of may, and had to wait till 23rd until its sim was activated.

Firmware: V 3.0614.0.3 - 11-04-2006 - 42.04 (Vodafone Phones4U)

In the mean time I still used it loads, as a camera, mp3 player etc....

During this period the only problems were:

- Never did get Ad-Hoc WiFi working. Had to connect to an infrastructure instead... this is not how I wished to use it!

- Out of the box, with NO other applications running, Snakes would load up, and some weird number entry box flashes up loads of times really quick and crashes. On the rare occasions when Snakes DOES play, it often crashes after 5 mins.

- One morning I was taking a few photos, and when loading into the gallery to view them, the phone crashed and turned off. When it back on, I could not access the memory card. It just froze the phone when trying.
So I put it into my PC. Half of my files where corrupt... which pissed me off. So I backed up the good files, and tried to format the memory card. Failed. Tried to delete all the data on the memory card, most of it deleted but some failed. Tried to format again... failed. Had to do a Quick Format in the end, followed by a Normal format which worked. Then I put it back in Phone and formatted with File system, and copied data back to it. It has been fine since then, but why did it corrupt?? I ALWAYS *remove memory card* before pulling the card out.

- Severe memory problems like most other people have been experiencing...

- Extremely pissed off when I found my library of S60 2nd edition software doesnt work... had no warning of this!!!

Sim card has now been activated.......

- Now this really annoyed me, The Web Browser. When im using it at home, I use a WiFi access point called HOME. This is saved in the phone and I set it as default. But when Im out and about, and I want to use Vodafones web, I have to manually go to settings and change the default to Vodafone. If I set the option to ASK EVERY TIME, when it asks me, all I can see is "Scan for WiFi networks." It doesnt list any 3G/GPRS connections... GRRRRRR. Is this just my phone? Because I swear when I first had it, it listed ALL.

Here comes the annoying stuff.

- When im calling someone, 90% of my calls so far have CUT OFF. Within about 12 seconds of talking fine, suddenly the other person can not hear me, but I can hear them. Then it says "Disconnected"

- After that happens I cant dial out or receive a call for about 30 seconds. Incoming calls also drop, which is a right pain in the arse!!

- Video calls..... If I call someone else, it starts working, I can see my own camera, it rings the other end... but no matter what phone or network im ringing, the other phone *thinks* its a voice call... and receives a loud BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP instead of the video. When in Phones4U Store trying to sort this, he tried video calling another phone on same network, Vodafone, it says on screen... "Not supported by network"
Incoming video calls work fine...... WHY DOES IT NOT WORKL!??! ARRRGHHH

- Vodafone Live.... the soft key brings up the browser.. Connects to the internet... and then returns "Server Busy" or "Bad Gateway".... but if I browse away from Vodafones websites, to google or bbc, it works fine.. and quite fast...

In Phones4U Store they tried placing my sim in brand new N80, it solved VodaLive problem, but video calls got worse, and voice calls i dont think we tested. After spending about an hour in store speaking to Vodafone support they said its a Faulty SIM CARD...... (*Cough*... *Bollocks*)

Well my new sim card arrived. Put it in, they said it would be activated INSTANTLY.

An hour later, still says "Sim registration Failed"

So I pop old sim in, and call Voda and get them to do it.

Once its done im back up and running....

Video calls.... Still fucked.
Voda Live... still wont load.
Voice Calls..... Much Much WORSE. Now getting un-bearable... have to repeat call people so many times during a conversation. (When phone Vodafone support, I had to start ALL AGAIN FOUR TIMES because it cut off. each time getting more pissed off, the 4th time she agreed to ring ME back if it cuts off... (Which it didnt for the first time ever..)

So anyway... im going in store today to get a new handset see if it fixes these problems....

Anybody had similar troubles??? :icon4:

You may want to flsh your phone with the new firmware with my guide in the other thread here.

Ir take it to your nokia service point and have them flash it.

The first firmware (the one you have) aint too hot and I had a few problems.

- battery life poor
- memory crashes only when i handle with 1. Slideshow 2. Fotos in Gallery
files based all in memory card. In fact, puting out and in the card resolves
the problem whitout resetting the cell.

Ok just got back from town with replacement N80.

Firmware version is still the old one, (this is the latest batch of n80s to hit southampton..)

But... everything now works fine... video calls... voda live... voice calls dont cut off.

And a few of the annoying bugs I found on my n80 are not there any more. Even with same revision firmware. I now leave internet on "Ask every time" and it does what it is meant to.... show all connections not just wifi.

Snake works fine and so far have had no memory problems.

(I would turn off 'History List' and 'Mini-Map' in the browser to greatly reduce mem problems..)

So if anybody else has had symptoms like mine, Voice calls dropping, Video calls dialing as Voice calls etc... and they try to tell you its a SIM CARD fault... tell them you want a new handset!! (with latest firmware ofcourse!)

Im going to go get my firmware flashed 2moro... hopefully should resolve some other bugs!!

ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

The second N80, has just started dropping calls like the first one.....

ive had 2 simcards, 2 n80s and problem has not gone... WHAT IS IT??!?!

Ive been ringing around for last hour to local nokia service centres, and after calling them back about 5 times after losing connection, they Both say they cant flash N80s yet.

HELP!

GazP - sounds like you've been a bit unlucky since I think most people are doing fine with the N80. It may be you ended up with the earlier firmware. I guess it is one of the dangers of being early adopters.

I'm running v3.0614.03 11/04/2006 RM92 firmware on an unlocked N80 purchased from Expansys using the O2 Network with a brand new 3G SIM and have had none of the issues described by GazP.

Granted I haven't used WiFi in adhoc mode (infrastructure works well) or made any Video calls (I don't know anyone with a video-call capable phone :frown😊 but everything seems to work as it should. I've set things up so I'm prompted for my choice of connection method when accessing web / email / etc) and that works as it should. Adobe Reader, Google Maps, Nokia's Download Contacts application, Lifeblog etc all work fine.

The software issue wasn't a surprise for me as I'd done some reading up beforehand and had similar issues when I was an early adopter of Windows Mobile 5. I'm happy to wait for the few remaining applications I want (a decent WiFi scanner for one!). The only niggle for me is trying to track down a nice looking white theme lol.

I've looked into flashing the latest firmware but haven't bothered so far for 3 reasons:
1. I'm not having any issues.
2. The new firmware doesn't seem to offer sufficient benefits for the hassle
3. My local NSC doesn't have the firmware in yet, and I ain't chancing it myself (too many bad BIOS flashing experiences).

Ive tried flashing from two pcs so far but both failed...

Just been on phone to a load more nokia service centers within 50 miles of here..

They all wont touch the N80 if their lives depended on it.... 😡

So what do I do? Do I get a third replacement??

Some people have said along the way... it might be caused by the number port.... (I ported my mobile number from O2 to voda when setting up contract)

I still recieve 02 service messages, and some think it could be trying to register on both networks when I make phone calls???

O2 service messages as in SMS? To get those would mean you would have to be physically connecting to the O2 network, I would imagine that would cause no end of problems.

Dr, Who? wrote:O2 service messages as in SMS? To get those would mean you would have to be physically connecting to the O2 network, I would imagine that would cause no end of problems.

Now you can see my problem!!

Ive been on the phone to O2, but obviously keep getting cut off. Every time I ask them to phone me back if i do, and they promise. 5 Times, explaining the problem for ten mins, then getting cut off, with no return call is a PISS TAKE.

last time I rang I asked to speak to tech dept. manager... he said not available at moment but he will leave message and he will ring me within hour. Its been more than an hour with no reply so far....

ARRRRRRRRRGHHH

Ok... scrap that comment.... its just started doing that AGAIN aswell!! 😡 😡 😡 (Only listing wifi connections instead of Wifi + Contact WaP etc... when set to ASK EVERY TIME)

How am I being this unlucky!!!

Ok, ive finally got through to one of the support managers at vodafone, and she actually rang me back when i cut off. She has spoke to O2 Number porting dept. and they say there might be a problem..... Will sort in morning....

Hopefully this resolves the dropping calls, the many times I tried ringing 02 they were complete wankers to me.... and wouldnt help at all. Probably because ive just left them for Voda!!!

Also asked Phones4U, about firmware. they said they can send it to nokia and it will take 2 weeks, but i will not get a loan phone to use in mean time.

Then he said if i send it to nokia my self, they will send out a loan phone whilst they flash it.... might have to do this instead... all these bugs in the old firmware are doing my head in!!!

Went in to phones4u again today, after speaking to vodafone, who keep telling me its a handset problem...

Put simcard in a BenQ phone, and it still doesnt work for video calls. We didnt have time to test the call drops, but it still wasnt working like it should do.

So that would point to a Simcard / Network problem???

So, for the third time, they gave me a new simcard. Activated simcard, tried in my phone and other phones and still wont work.

But then when they someone elses known working (video calls) simcard in my N80... and it STILL wont work....

Which points back to the handset. Its now been 2 weeks trying to resolve this problem, 3 simcards and multiple handsets later... with worse problems than i started off with.

ANY BODY HAVE ANY IDEAS AT ALL?!?!??

Please help if you do... im in desperation now!

I am still on Old firmware, but no nokia service centers around here have the software yet.
(If i take the firmware thats available on the net to them.. will they do it?)

OK THINGS JUST GOT A LOT WIERDER>>>

Whilst typing this, i quickly tried a call to 191, (voda assistance)

And the recorded message was playing at nearly 2x too slow.... Ok, i thought its a problem with there menu system, not my phone. But then the assistant answered, and HER VOICE ASWELL was going really slow....

WHAT ON EARTH IS GOING ON??

Its a pity you have'nt "lost" your phone somewhere, I assume its insured that way you will get a totaly brand new phone and sim card within 24 hours (there wont be any refurbs about at the moment).
