6680 as a bard code reader?

6 replies · 3,215 views · Started 05 June 2006

Hi -

I haven't been able to find an answer in this forum - perhaps someone could point me in the right direction please?

I've got a 6680 and I want to use it as a data capture device for bar codes so I can inventory books, CD's and wine bottles.

Ideally I'd like to have some software which will allow me to "check in" or "check out" these items. It would also be good to synch the CD information with an Internet service. I.e. scan the CD's bar code with my phone, upload this info to my PC, connect to the net and get album info from the relevant servers.

Any thoughts?

Cheers,
Chris

I haven't seen this sort of thing. The main problem is phones have problems reading 2d bar codes at the moment. Only 3d barcodes (e.e. smeacode.org work) and thus this sort of application hasn't been made available.

Nice idea though.

Rafe and WareCatf - many thanks for your quick replies!

I don't see an obvious way to extract the data out of BCReader but will drop them a line to see if this is possible. In the meantime, if anyone has any other suggestions - or experiences with bar code readers - I'd be very interested to hear your thoughts.

Incidentally, Rafe, I tried to connect to smeacode.org without success. Can you confirm that's the right URL?

Cheers,
Chris

I believe the correct url is http://semacode.org/

Though, I'm sorry I can't help you any more with BCReader since I have never used anything such as I have no use for such. I just accidentally stumbled upon it and the name kind of stuck :P
