Not that this will come as much of a surprise to regular AAS readers, but Nokia has commissioned research into mobile phone use and found that almost half the respondents/interviewees already use their mobile as their main camera and over two thirds want their mobile to be their music player as well. Full press release below...

I am a firm believer in convergence and can't see how it will not happen, given time, but the results of this study gave me the impression to be too good to be "true". Not that somebody is lying, of course, but maybe just stress the right thing and leave away the rest?
Half of the people interviewed use their mobile as their "main camera"? Well, maybe, but how many of these people are important in the sense that they really do take more than the occasional fun picture once a week - and of couse use their mobile for doing so?
How about this question instead: How many people are content to go to holiday with their phone as their "main" (and then probably, only) camera? Now, in the middle of 2006, not in 2 or 3 years where the situation will probably change?
I tracked down the press release on Nokia's site in the hope to find more details. But here was only the following "information for editors" at the end as additional information that might be of some interest:
"ICM Research interviewed 5,500 respondents aged 18 - 35 years old across eleven countries in March 2006.
500 interviews were conducted in the following countries Brazil, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Spain, Saudi Arabia, UK and USA. "
Main Camera! With N73 and even better N93, sure. But now!? rbrunner is correct... Today, go in a holiday with what??? K750i? N70? I dont think so.
