With broadband at home I leave my computer on and emails obviously appear. No extra cost.
To get e-mail on the N80 I have to connect to Orange internet and then dowload. Can I leave this connection on all the time or will I get charged extraordiary prices, meaning it best to disconnect. My impression is that you only get charged for use of the up/download not leaving it on.

You only pay for data used, not for the connection time. So, you can remain connected all day and, if you don't actually send or receive information, it won't cost you anything.

Be careful if you are on UK Vodafone, and if you are roaming abroad whilst checking your N80 email. On some data tariffs, they charge you a hefty fee just for making a GPRS (packet data) connection abroad, even if you don't transfer any data. This rule seems to apply to their "full internet" access point, and not to their WAP access point. The former is the one you'd use for checking POP email.
Once, I got stung very badly by this. I was in Germany waiting for a train, and out of boredem started to habitually check my email every 5 minutes. Of course, I never had any email, but each time my old 7610 created an internet connection, I was being chagred about a quid.
My phone bill that month was £60 higher than normal. Ouch. I couldn't find these extortionate "connection charges" published anywhere, but when I complained I was told "Tough. I should have rung customer care and asked them first". When I added up all the data I'd actually transferred, it was something daft like 300kb.
If only I'd have known, I'd have set my 7610 to keep the Internet Connection "always on" instead of "when needed". Or, just not bothered checking my email at all.

Okay, I know this doesn't neccessarilly apply to the OP, but the moral of the story is, always check all the small print in your Service Provider tariff... even if you have to nag customer services to get it.
