Multimedia message size.

I have a N80 on orange uk and when i receive a multimedia picture message , the picture comes through at a miniscule 6k in size which is too small to make out whats on it. Zooming in on it makes it bigger but the resolution is not there. Orange UK tell me that this is an issue with the s60 operating system and nothing to do with them. Is this the case?Is it the same for all of you?

Thanks
Greg

Just a thought, but have you tried changing the Image Size setting found under
Messaging - Options - Settings - Multimedia Message?

HTH

Yeah mine is like that also, was wondering about that yesterday when I received a MMS. I find it hard to believe that it is a S60 fault as it was fine on my 7610, unless it's a 'feature' introduced with 3rd edition.

It's because of the 352 x 416 screen resolution, If you fit double the amount of pixels in a screen, then obviously a picture is going to look smaller
If you were to view it on a N70 176 x 208 screen for example it would look much bigger.

It is not a fault with the phone, All you can do is get the person sending pictures to change their MMS settings to send large pictures.

By default most phones send small pictures approx 8k, why ??

Because the operator charges you by the MMS, so if a picture is small, they use less bandwidth and it costs them less, if you send a large picture (up to to 100k) it still costs you the same, but costs them more.

I understand the resolution thing , but the pictures from the same sender on my treo 650 were received as 80K sized images and were much sharper with more resolution. The picture im getting now is not only smaller its lower resoluion too being only 8k in size.

The N80 doesn't downscale received pictures, if they are only 8K then only 8K was sent, the sender must have set his phone to send small images.

A quick test wouldb be to send yourself a 80k mms and see if arrives downsized

The n80 DOES downsize images..i had an 850kb image that was resized by the n80 to 10kb before i sent it to a friend.

read what i said.

Yes the N80 will downsize images that you SEND if you have the settings in MMS to small, but that is not what I said.

I said the N80 does not downsize RECEIVED images.

my bad..and yes. you are correct. it doesn't downsize INCOMING mms...unless the phone is in gsm mode only...

If my friend sends me an image from their phone, a sont 750k and i receive it on my treo , the message attachment is 83k , the same message re-sent from their phone to my N80 and its 8k. Therefore it must be the N80 surely.I have also sent myself a message with the picture set to large in the mms prefs and the received image is still only 8k.

To be honest I don't know then.

You can not send a 750k image via MMS the max is 100k, what phone does your friend have.

On my N80 If I send myself a 978k image (mms setting to large) it downsizes to 93k.

It is still 93k when I receive it back on my N80, and still 93k when I send it to the wifes 6230

sorry i meant to say their phone is a sony k750i not the message size, the message size is 83k that they send. Its weird i know but i cant work out whats going on apart from the phone causing a problem

Cheers

Has anyone come up with a solution for this as it's been bugging me for some time now. I have a SE S700i that used to receive MMS picture messages fine (around 30 - 40K and about 640X480px) then one day all my received MMS pictures started to come in at around 8-12K and only 112X150px, around about the same time I'm sure I received a 'settings text message' from Vodafone that I accepted.

When I phoned Vodafone they said they have never heard of this problem and I must of changed some settings on my phone.

Anyway I lived with the problem and did nothing about, now I've moved over to Orange and have a N80 and f**k me I have the very same problem!

I send myself a photo on the N80 and it leaves the phone a healthy 512x384px 60KB and a couple of seconds later I receive (on the same phone) the same image scaled down to a puny 176x132px 8KB ?????

I rang Orange and they didn't have a clue. I know my N80 is NOT resizing the photos before it sends them because I've sent the same photos to other phones (Razr & K750i) and they receive them nice and big. I think it's my network resizing the images in transit.

Please someone help it's driving me mad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would like an answer to this toooooooo!

I took a pic on my 6680 and sent it MMS to my n80 and it came up really small but u could zoom in on it, saved it and it was the same in Gallery. so i sent the same image to my n80 via cable and pc and it was the same kb as the one sent by mms but was bigger straight away, no need for a zoom jus to see it.

Why is this man, why dont things jus work, things jus never work how u want them to (or how they should really)

😡

I had this same problem for 2 months changing all the settings (im very up on this sort of technology with mobiles) but had no luck so got in touch with technical services with orange and they were very very helpful trying to sort this problem with recieving small (usually somewhere between 2kb - 12kb).

after many phone calls and speaking to many technical guys from orange they too were confused and tried sending pics to their own Nokia N80 mobiles in the office and said they had exactly the same problem.

sending large pics up to 100kb to other mobiles is not a problem as others will recieve what you send.

so Orange got intouch with Nokia and here is the bad news.............

its not a fault with the phone just the way Nokia have made the phone in the first place.......... Nokia have explained in some great detail that because of the high resolution of the N80 when recieving pics of 100kb or less through SMS from other mobiles the phone will automatically downsize the pics.

In other words Nokia have boasted about the amazing screen resolution but messed up big time with the recieving SMS.

So i spoke to Nokia myself and unfortunately I got no luck other than we have to live with it.............. personally Id have much preferd to have kept my Nokia 6630 very user friendly and never had any problems.

hope this helps you guys out sorry its not the answer you were hoping for 😞

Something tells me this could be a problem with the Orange firmware on your phone. I've got a N80 using Generic firmware with an O2 PAYG simcard and I recieve all MMS messages exactly how they were sent to me

Sorry but Orange technical are talking B*****ks, I recieve images from people all the time, if they send me a 90k image then I receive a 90k image.

I am on Vodafone, but my brother's N80 is on Orange, to test what you are saving I have sent him a 76k image, and he has received a 76k image.

I think what Nokia are trying to say is that if you view for example a 100 x 100 pixel image on a N80 with a 352 x 416 pixel screen it is going to look smaller than a 100 x 100 image would look on a N70 with a 176 x 208 pixel screen.

It is no different to a PC, change the screen res to 800 x 600 and everything looks huge, change to 1280 x 800 and everything looks small and you can fit more on screen

This isn't a fault - the screen has more "dots per inch" than most mobile phones. so at 10x10 image will look tiny on an N80 screen in comparison to an older model (say 6630). It doesn't downsize - the phone will display it as it's received, regardless of if it's 10KB or 100KB it will just look smaller due to the high resolution of the screen. To see what I mean look at a photo on your computer with your monitor settings set to 800x600, and then change it to 1024x768, and the picture will look physically smaller.

Saying this, Orange do seem to shrink images going in/out of their MMS system. Notice users on other networks (e.g. O2, Voda) when sending to other non-orange phones or receiving from other non-orange phones don't have the problem. I have read on other forums (but can't find the link at the moment) that says Orange are aware of the problem with images being scaled down to much and are looking at resolving it.

I hear and understand what is being said but the confusing part is that.........

I had a Nokia 6630 always set at the highest screen and i was with Orange as for my wife she has a Nokia 6680 and keeps her screen and pics set at the highest resolution.......

we never had any problems sending pics to eachother from and too these phones and no pics were down sized but now with the N80 they are down sizing regardless of who or what pics are being sent and regardless of what settting my N80 is..............

who is at fault? Orange? Nokia? or the both conflicting with eachother?

I am very disappointed with this N80 its extremely slow! battery is terrible! Gallery is poor needs an upgrade and why cant i view my pics for more than 2 seconds after i take them!

yep, i dont know why on earth i waited for this phone for so long when its absolutly crap, slow, buggy and crashes daily 😞

Hi everyone! Sorry about talk about this again, but does anyone know the solution to this problem? I have a free n80 with Orange Spain and the last firmware.

Can anyone that don't have the problem say his product code for nss and try another different firmware?

Thanks a lot!!
