My E70 seems to close down applications automatically using some random scheme. I have been very happy with my 9210 where you could easily keep your most used applicatios open. When I leave e.g. my dictionary on and move to other applications I very often find that it is 'gone' when I want to switch back. Is this some sort of automatic memory management scheme to increase available memory when needed? It certainly is annoying.
E70 memory management
Sounds like you have a faulty device to me, it shouldn't be behaving like that. If those apps really do disappear like that, you ought to contact Nokia for free repairs.
Are you sure the apps have gone though? Have you held the Symbian squiggle key down to see what apps are running?
When Symbian runs out of memory (DRAM), it can close an app running in the background without warning you so that the foreground app can be kept running (based on some assumption, I presume, that a user would be more interested in the foreground app than a background app).

You'd have to be running quite a few apps at once though wouldn't you? The E70 has quite a bit of RAM doesn't it?
It depends how application behave. If they reserve a lot of memory when running in the background (e.g. keeping a ductionary file open in RAM) then it can get used up quickly). But yes the E70 has a lot of RAM so it is suprising to see this happen.
Coming to think about it I may have pressed the red hang-up button instead of using the menu button to come back to the stand-by menu. It is easy to do and that will definately close the current application rather than switch back to stand-by. I need to investigate further before I make any further accusations against this otherwise very nice device.
I hate that behaviour change (before S60 2nd Edition Feature Pack 3, the red/hang-up key didn't close the foreground app, but since then it has, and it is a royal PITA, so to speak).
And for the "uninitiated", PITA = Pain In The A** 😉
Yes I agree one of my least favourite changes. Previously it use to (in most instances) just switch it to backgroud which was actually quite handy.
