Is it possible to show various things such as calender entries or to-dos on the home screen? It just seems like a waste of space just having a background there!

Home Screen
Try the "Active standby" setting (details in the User's Guide). Whether it is available on your device depends, of course, on which one you have (it is a "newish" thing that older devices do not have).
Application named "Best Desk", it's samelike than active desktop on 6680.
It has features like calendar, call log, favourites, system info, todo etc.
Google for it or something.
I have it on 6630, and it's great 😊
