n80 on three - lock to O2

Hi

I've just got an N80 on the three network (in UK).

With my old phone (a 6630 also on three) I downloaded the "Field Test" app which allowed me to lock the phone to the o2 network as opposed to flitting between 3 and o2 in areas of poor reception.

This proved an invaluable tool without which the phone was practically useless as it kept losing a signal all the time.

Anyone know if there is a similar app yet for the N80 or if the old app works? (my n80 is on charge at the mo so I can't test it for 14 hours or so!)

Edited: I just read this about the N70 - you don't need the field test software just go to : Tools/Settings/Network/Network Mode/ then select GSM. Is this true with the n80?

Thanks,

#gav

That option is there (haven't tried it though), and offers you to chose from one of the following 3 choices:
Dual Mode (which mine is currently on)
UMTS
GSM

Hope that offers a little bit of insight. Where did you get the Field Test App by the way. I have a 7600, and i think it would be perfect for me too.

Maybe im missing something here...

Why dont you just set the operator selection on to O2,

ie:

TOOLS -> SETTINGS -> NETWORK -> Operator Selection

and change automatic to the selected ntwk you want, in your case 02.

ut.

As for me can't find the dual/gsm option.
Maybe three have disabled it.

Where exactly is it?

Gavin

It's exactly where you said it was on the N70. I'd say that 3 have disabled it. They also disabled a similar option on my 7600 as far as I know.

Thanks. Yes I am doing that.
Well I am actually setting it to 3 network (non-3g)

But for some reason it keeps resetting back to automatic after 10 minutes or so.

Any ideas?

It's not a good idea to do it to be honest. As 3 will track your usage and see you are constantly in 2G mode and can halt your service, it costs them more when you roam outside there network. But if your really desperate then just flash the phone with a generic firmware and it will activate it the network settings the choice for GSM only.

Hmm thanks.
I don't really want to backdate the firmware.
Thing is 3g reception is so poor at home here I can't really use it.
Strange how you can set network selection to manual and choose the network you want but then it flips back to automatic.
Thanks Anyway,

Gavin

O2 network is not listed in the window on my '3' phone, when I selected auto, it says briefly 02 UK then says 3 so it must be the firmware fixed.

lost me on that part, whats backdating?

I to need a program to lock it to o2 were I work at the min it had good o2 signal and really weak 3g but the phone would prefer to have 1 - 0 bars of signal on 3g network than 3 - 4 bars on o2. So I miss a lot of calls now 😡

The firmware on my phone is a newer version than the lastest generic firmware.
So if I install the latest generic firmware I will be 'backdating' as opposed to updating.

Think I might wait a while till new generic version is released.

Olly - on my phone if I select 'manual' (Network Settings) I get the choice of 3(3G) or 3. I think that 3 represents the 2G (O2) network. If I select this it does choose that network but then reverts to automatic and in a few minutes gives 3(3G) preference. Does your phone do a similar thing?

Pinola - As I understand it if you flash the firmware on your phone and use generic firmware (as opposed to thast provided by three) then you will be able to lock the phone to the 2G (O2) network. If you do try this let me know how you get on!

As someone said you risk trouble with three but then what's the point in having a phone if you can't use it?

I have good strong video signal in my town and on my street, but as soon as I enter my house the vid signal drops to zero and flicks over to '3'
It does goes back to auto once the signal I selected drops.

yeah i might wait untill the next generic version any news on when this will be out?

just spoken to 3 told them in on the edge of 3g area ect.... asked them if there was any way to disable the 3g just while i was at work ect.. then basicly said no. 😞
