Anyone know how to disassemble nokia e61?

Hello everyone,
so does anyone know how to or know of a web site that shows how to disassemble the nokia e61 device. I tried to disassemble it the other day and i was stuck partial way trying to take it appart. I don't know if this particular part is screw in or snap in. I don't want to take a chance prying it off and mess up the housing, as there are currently no replacement housing available yet. I wanted to take out the little 5 way joy stick and try to fabricate a different design for it, to make it easier to use. The current one is soo tiny and so hard to press.

please let me know if anyone have any clue.

Tam

Hello,
thanks for the helpfull respond, but i have manage to find a different way to disassemble the nokia e61 not long after i started this thread. Safely and effiently. Although the webpage you refer does appear to be easier. But be very carefull when removing the back cover, pretty tricky if you don't want to scratch your phone.

what i did as a modification while i had the device disassemble was added some grease to the 5 ways joystick. The little joystick in the in the middle of the device just below the screen. I found this joystick a little dificult to use and it started to squeak progresively over many repetive use, making navigation even more difficult. I had to push hard sometimes to get it to work and every push i made cause a squeak. Very anoying. What i did was use a flat head screw driver and slowly and carefully pry the joystick nub up to reveal the actual joystick below. The actual joystick below the joystick nub is actually very small and delicate. It is small like a needle pin, and plastic too. There is also a plastic ring just below joystick pin. This plastic ring moves and rub against the joystick plastic housing and the actual plastic joystick pin itself, which causes all the squeaking noise when it shifted around. (The whole joystick assembly constuction is plastic.) i use the edge of the xacto knife and press the grease into the little edged between the plastic ring and the housing and the joytick pin, and add some little spare grease on the surface on the edge to let it work itself in over time. The type of grease i use in the white grease i found in rc hobby servos. It is a grease for plastic gears. I actually disassemble a hobby servo and salvage some grease from the gears for this job. You can also find this grease in some vhs video players or some casset tape players, where ever there are plastic gears. Dont use WD-40 or machine oil. It will sqeak again in a few days.

now over weeks of use the greased joystick is still very easy to use. It feels much lighter on the finger and no sqeaks. I dont have to use as much effort to move the joystick nub anymore.

Is removing the back cover just a matter of "popping it off" with a flat implement, or is there any glue or tape holding it in place as well?

The website linked above that has pictorial instructions seems to show it just snapping off, but I had always thought there was heat glue or some other kind of adhesive holding the housing in place.

For that matter, is there any such adhesive material holding ANY parts of the housing together, or is it all just screws and snap-in parts?

When you re-assemble the housing, does it still have the same "tight and solid" feel that the E61 generally has out of the box, or is it more loose than before?

Thanks!

If done carefully the disassembly/reassembly should not make the phone any worse off.
The whole thing is held together with torx 5 & 6s (mostly 6s, only 1x5 at the base of the lcd screen).
The tricky bit is the antenna cover at the rear. There are three small plastic teeth that extend downwards from the antenna cover and into the body of the phone, where the antenna cover meets the battery compartment area. As suggested in the take apart link above, get a small knife and gently push & lever the cover off. The most difficult of these three teeth is the one on the right hand side as you are facing the rear of the unit, above where the sim card goes. Just go very easy. Reaching in with a small object a bit and pushing the tooth up towards the top of the phone may help, being careful not to damage any plastic. The three teeth are exactly in line with the three plastic moulded semi circles you can see when the rear cover is off.
Once these three teeth are out then the top of the antenna cover grabs the frame and can be taken out with a little jiggling, at the right angle. Don't force anything.
Removing the antenna cover will show you 2 more 6 torx bolts that need to be removed, then the PCB assembly comes away from the internal chassis.

The LCD can be removed by taking off the connector (tiny, thin top part of connector has a connector bit underneath it and mates to a connection on the board, go gently again) as well as the top 6 torx and the only 5 torx at the bottom of the screen. This is on the front side of the PCB once you have the board assembly out from the chassis. The top torx 6 is a long self tapper and holds the antenna assembly onto the board. There is a UK site somewhere on the web that sells new antenna assemblies.
Screen can be dismantled by gently prising between metal housing/plastic cover and the LCD element itself. Between the plastic outer cover and LCD can then be cleaned this way. New LCDs are available pretty cheap at http://cnn.cn .
hope I have been clear enough.
