Do a search for IM, there already is a thread here that has dealt with this issue.
Quick answer: It depends on settings from your operator. If they dont support it, it will not work.

you can't do a search for IM, its to short, and even if it wasnt, itd bring up almost every thread. Thats why i created this thread, impossible to sort through them to find the 'IM' im looking for.

try using a differnt search string like "instant" or " instant im"..but I understand what you are saying .
Try a Java apps. In N70 they work, but is OS8.x. In N80 Im not sure. See here: http://www.getjar.com/software/ (legal download site with lot of Java apps).
You can use a service like Yamigo (i.e. it has to be one that supports the Wireless Village protocol). However for most people it will be eaiser to use something like Agile Messeneger (www.agilemobile.com), IM+ (www.shapesolutions.de) or eMSN.

It's not working for me and I've only tried via wifi to my router, that has nothing to do with my service provider.
