Hi, this is my first post on this forum, thought i would start with a cracker!
Im trying to network my N80 to my LAN, to get on the internet.
heres my current setup.
BT Router > PC
"""""""""" > Laptop
and obviously, the pc and laptop use the router as a gateway to the internet. simple! this original setup is wired with 100mbps lan cards.
i would like the following:
BT Router > PC
"""""""""" > Laptop >> N80
> = Wired
>> = Wifi
now, i can connect the n80 to the laptop, but i cant get on to the internet
at the moment the IPs are thus
192.168.0.1 > 192.168.0.2
""""""""""""" > 192.168.0.3/192.168.0.4 >> 192.168.0.5
basically, the 100mbps lan card in the laptop is .3, and the wifi is .4, and the N80 is .5.
is there something i can do different to get the internet connection available on the N80?
one way would be to change the laptop to 192.168.0.1 but then the router has to change to something which then stops the laptop being able to access the net.
Help!

Not sure you can do that,
Why dont you just buy a wireless adsl router, you can get one for about 25.00
unfortunately this is not an option where the internet connection comes in is different part of the site to where the laptop is. and there is a cable running underground to the router from here. tried doing wireless but unfortunately there was no signal from here.

I tried to do what you wanted to try with a wireless laptop to connect to the internet through a PC with a wireless card that was hardwired to the internet through a router but I could never get it to work, I could get the laptop and PC to comunicate, but could never get the laptop to connect to the internet.
If the router has wifi maybe a wifi extender or repeater might be an option
oh well. i didnt know if there was a way of me tunnelling through or something, or if there was some software that could share my Wired LAN connection. worth a try i guess!

Right, Presuming you have Windows on the laptop this should be easy.
I have 1 Wired router, and 3 pcs, and Wifi on one PC going to my N80 and it works fine.
What you need to do is "BRIDGE" the wired and wireless connection on the laptop.
Do this by right clicking on the network connections and selecting Bridge. A New icon will appear in network connections, called Bridge. Right click this, and set its IP. This one interface now replaces both the other ones. Ip should be .0.3.
Anything that connects wirelessly now gets sent directly to the router... either have an IP set on the N80 or your router should DHCP one.
Let me know if you have any problems doing this, should be easy!

Wow, learn something new everyday .. cheers Gaz
oh ffs. im so thick. seriously. ive bridged a million connections before when doing lans and stuff and this never even crossed my mind.
THICK.
Thank You so bloody much, i shall give it a try!
i'm doing something wrong here, when i apply the bridge to both i lose my internet connection completely. and obviously then the n80 does. any ideas?
once you create the bridge, you will have to edit its settings. (You can still see the actual individual network interfaces... but there settings do not matter now..)
Right click on the bridge and set it up as you would normally...
yea i just realised that it hadnt created 192.168.0.1 as the DNS with DHCP so i have done it myself and will give it a go!
well i have internet connection back on my laptop but the N80 is still saying no gateway reply, this is on DHCP mode. should i change the IPv4 settings?
hmmm.
on my laptop it says the bridge is connected fine as is the 100mbps wired lan. but theres a cross on the wireless since i have bridged it. Grrrr!
This is a screenshot of my system.... you can see the Network card for Xbox and Wireless card both say not connected... I think this is a bug in XP, as they always say this, even when connected and working fine.

BTW, if you have that folder in ICON View, yes there is a RED CROSS on the wireless/xbox etc.
yep mines exactly the same as that except mines 0.1 rather than 1.1 but that shouldnt make a difference. what are your setting on ur N80? ive tried every combination i can think of 😞
thanks for this by the way Gaz
Im presuming the laptop has internet working fine now yeah??
My setup is using 128bit WEP, and I have not touched the IPv4 settings.
Delete all your connections on N80, and then disable all WEP/WPA/MAC Filtering on the WiFi on the laptop.
Now load WEB from the phone, and search for access points. Select your WiFi and see if it works??
Once we get this working.... Then we save it as an access point and slowly enable security....
hmm ok gaz ill try this, however to make it an access point i would need different hardware wouldnt i? i just have a bog standard USB Wireless G adapter in my laptop.
Sorry ive confused you...
By ACCESS POINT, i mean, settings saved in your N80 as an "Access point"
i haven tried this. deleted the access point from my N80, deleted the network from the laptop and started again creating a new Ad-hoc network on the laptop with no security.
on the phone i went to browse the web, selected search WLAN for access points, it comes up with the new network. i click that and it says "WLAN: Unable to connect. WLAN not found."
WTF?
GazP wrote:Sorry ive confused you...By ACCESS POINT, i mean, settings saved in your N80 as an "Access point"
yes im easily confused =]
. i click that and it says "WLAN: Unable to connect. WLAN not found."
I get this 2 out of 5 times.. just repeat untill it connects. Maybe a bug with firmware on phone.

I have this sometimes, it will not connect on first attempt, but try again and on second attempt will connect
unfortunately its doing it everytime for me 😞
wierd... thats about all i can suggest at the moment.
Are you using the wifi keys Own branded software? or are you using XP's built in software.
try using the other....
using WZC at the mo but i have some other software. ill keep playing about 😞
I think i started with WZC and couldnt get it to work. (in Ad-Hoc Mode)
So i tried the software that came with the device, and it actually had a "software - infrastructure mode" which allowed the key to work like a wireless access point as apposed to ad-hoc.

Peak Mini Usb Wireless Key .... 100% compatible with N80 in access point mode

Purchase one through Froogle:

i wonder if your software would work with my usb wireless dongle? hmmm..
im 99.7% sure that it wouldnt.
im sure you will get it working, just keep trying! thats what i had to do!
yea im 90% of the way there thanks to your help i must admit! but still, im downloading your software now to try 😮
