If I add a news item through the CMS, it repeats the summary at the beginning of the main text.
Should I remove the summary from the main text from now on, or is this just a temporary glitch?

Yes the summary is also used as the first paragraph on the main text. So properly the sumary should say first para... The reason this was done was to allow more flexibility in what the first paragraph (as used on the front page and news feeds) was.
So it's a feature not a glitch 😊
Remove the summary para from the main text.
