I just got a E61 today and I believe it is running the April firmware. It crash a couple of time when I was in the app. mgr menu and also when I was in the connect menu. I don't know if this is the software problem or not. It when I was trying the run the program that came with the memory card. Let me know what you guys think.
E61 crashing problem
mine also E61, m.. hang about 3 times in a month so far. now run just find, i have format the phone few times too.
Mine is E61 April firmware too (1.0610.04.04 - 19 April 2006), I have to reset it 3 times all for the error of Mail For Exchange, now its working perfectly.
More info to the crash:
If it crash once it will start crashing very often. Sometime it even crash if the phone is idle meaning just leaving it on and not touching it. I will then hard reset (format) the phone to get it working again. For some reason I change the sim card to a local one and things got better I guess (haven't crash it). Before I was using my Thailand sim card so it is on roaming.
When you guys say crashed, how doest it crash anyway? the screens becomes blank? system hangs? or how?
Just wondering =)
Anyway I've been using my E61 for about a month now and it never crash... working just fine...

the screen just go blank and shut down. Some time it might take a couple of try to start the system again. One question, did you install the software that came with the memory card?
Yep I did... but I uninstall all the software that came in the memory card and only left with ZipManager.

maybe it is the software that came with it. It is cursed! Can anybody back this up? For me it is not crashing now after I removed them all. (knock on wood because it has only been like 5-6 hours now that I removed them and re-format)
hang, some time need to take out the battery, otherwise can't turn off the phone.
I've had my E61 for a month and it hasn't crashed once. We all have the same firmware, it probably isn't that or we would all be suffering the same problems.
If yours is crashing, I'd suggest you check whether it's caused by any software you installed after buying it. If it still crashes, it'll be covered by the warranty and Nokia has to repair it for you for free, so you ought to contact them.

What software came with it?
Was it non-Nokia stuff?
I'd also like to know as I'm picking one up this week.
it came with a ZIP program, Golf game, World clock shit, and Exchange mail.
It was quite stable for me, until I installed some 3rd party e.g. Opera, Mobile search, etc...
So moral of the story is, install only those confirmed working well with e61.
I also had this problem and another problem where none of the applications installed on the ridiculously tiny memory card that came with the phone would open on occasion. Sometimes they would open and other times they would not. Also, as you noticed, somertimes the phone with freeze up and you could not even turn off the phone. I took it to a Nokia Care Center and they simply took the memory card out, put it back in again and it worked. Of course, later the problem came back. I ended up buying a 2 Gig memory card anyway and once I put that into the phone and reinstalled the applications onto that memory card....amazing...I never had another problem with the phone freezing up or in starting any applications. I think Nokia cheaped out not just on the size of the memory card they gave you with the phone but in the quality of it as well. Just buy a real memory card and your problems will likely just disappear.
mine also having same problem before with new Apacer memory card, i can't transfer more then 5 mp3 files in to it, even i format 100 times.
but don't know why, after i format using external card reader, then problem gone... funny man.

The E61 is extremely stable for a smartphone or PDA.
If you're interested in this issue, I'd suggest checking out independent reviews of it on the internet, most reviewers actually commented on how stable it is.
I've not had mine crash once, for any reason.
Mine crashes when I try to link an attachment to an email or multimedia message. It just sits there on the "opening" screen and the progress bar at the bottom whirrs away forever... if you hit any key (but power) it locks the progress bar and then only a full reboot via battery removal will fix it. If you hit power then you can get out to switch off the phone without the battery removal, but everything else kills it.
Got the factory 64 meg card and loads of apps.
Interestingly if I send the attached pic or sound file from the file manager then it works OK. Bizarre.
