first name last name problem

Hi all .............. my e61 bought in india has the first name last name problem.. does anybody know how to fix it .... thanks

I dont have a E61 to test. But in others Symbian phones, is like that: Menu - Contacts - Definitions - Last Nime / First Name.

hi - i just got my E70 (asian version) and i think mine has the same problem as well. by default the contacts show last name first name. these are the steps I did:

Contacts > Options > Settings > Name Display > Select > Change > "First nm. Last nm." from the 3 radio button options > OK

the contacts still show last name first name, and whrn i go back to the settings, it goes back to the default. seens like the pphone didnt store the changes.

Any thoughts?

:icon14: My bad translation from my language menu!

There is another bug here too. My contacts are set to firstname-lastname, but when an email or SMS arrives it is listed as lastname-firstname with no way of making it appear the right way around.

The setting in Contacts applies only to Contacts. The other apps like Messaging or Log does not have such a setting and do not honor the Contacts app setting.

For a "global" setting to apply to all apps, it should be in the "Settings" app, presumably. As it isn't, this behaviour is not a bug, but more of a missing feature that's never been there before (a bug is something that was intended to work in a certain way, but doesn't).

if you are using a very narrow definition of a software bug then you are right, however 20 years in IT has taught me that if a product does not offer what it suggests it does then it is rightly called a bug too.

If I change the setting in 'contacts' I expect all my programs which use the contacts list to show the change in the same way.

Be as it may; the feature/functionality is not there. Hopefully at least some future S60 release adds it (and then it'll be available only only on future devices; at least never in the past have new features been "retrofitted" to older models).

Is true, is not there, in any Symbian phone.

I have the problem on my E70 too. Actually, this is a bug because the settings option in the contacts has an option to change from 'last name first name' to 'last name, first name' and 'first name last name'. However, selecting the option or changing the setting has no effect on the contacts. It still stays on 'last name first name'. So basically, the setting is redundant. Dunno about you guys, but thats what I call a bug.

Its pretty annoying, because lets say i had a number for 'Pizza Hut'. This will show as 'Hut Pizza'. 😡 Hopefully, Nokia will fix it on the next firmware, and they'll get that out within this freakin' decade. It worked fine on all s60v1 and v2 phones.

Yep, same problem here on my Nokia E70 too, very damn annoying ... version 1.0610.05.06 (15-05-06) RM 10, in India

Any help in this regard will highly be appreciated.

Thanks.

Anyone know where i can download the latest firmware for NOkia E70, which is version 1.0610.05.07, I think that might help ....

i have 1.0610.05.07 and the problem still exists 😞 i just input first and last name in the first name field until it is resolved

This is a known bug in some asian version. It's fixed in the new firmware.. Until then, please be patience 😊 As I did once, but enjoying the fixes now ..

Nokia has acknowledged this problem and fixed it in the new firmware. Go to the support site for your model, there should be a link there to the Nokia Software Update utility. New Nokia BB5 phones have the ability to load software without needing to have extra equipment. All you need is the software and a USB cable.

I upgraded my E70 firmware, and the problem is now fixed. It'll load the updated version of your own existing language / operator settings.

The whole process is fairly easy, and fixes a lot of problems, increases WLAN connectivity reliability, battery life and lots of other things. Check on the Nokia support page for your model, updates are available for most BB5 phones, 6680, 6630, N series, E series, 5500, 3250, etc. Be sure to make backups of your phone memory on the card / computer, as you'll lost all data... Its also best to copy all the documents, images etc. to your HDD and format the mem card, as all the loaded apps will stop working after the update.

Hope this helps.

ya latest firmware on my E70 fixed the problem. though it's harder to connect to wireless networks after i scan for open ones. most of the time it fails. oh well, i don't use that feature much since i still can't get it to work on vonage.

i just wished nokia would support OS X more. i had to find a PC to do the firmware 🙄

guess we can't have it all

The problem's been fixed by the new firmare. I upgraded my E70 using the Nokia Software Updater, to version 2.0618.07.10

Apparently BB5 phones have a very cool feature which enables you to upgrade firmware yourself with just a USB cable. Just go to the Nokia support site for your phone, somewhere in the downloads, there'll be a link to the software upgrade tool, its free. It'll take a while to download, but once it does, it'll upgrade your firmware in 5 mins.

Just be VERY VERY careful that nothing inturrupts the update process while its writing to the phone, cable disconnection, etc. That'll really mess your phone up, leaving you no option but to take it to a Nokia care centre. Also before you perform the upgrade, take full backups of your phone, you'll lose all your data. Its also best to format your memory card and load all apps again. And be sure to read the documentation and information provided by nokia with the setup file. Its important.

The update fixes many issues, including the one with the first name last name problem. When you update, your phone will be updated with the upgrade of the same variant, language options, network locks and features, etc, that already exist on your phone. So if you have a language-centric phone, after upgrade the same language will still be there.

I'd say go for it, most s60v3 phones have new firmware available, and the update software automatically picks the one for your phone.

The following phones have new firmware available:

3250 - 3.18 to 3.21
E61 - 1.0610.04.04 to 2.0618.06.05
E70 - 1.0610.05.07 to 2.0618.07.10
N73 - 2.0628.0.0.1 to 2.0628.0.0.3
N80 - 3.0617.0.6 to 4.0623.0.41 to 4.0623.0.42
N93 - 10.0.025 to 11.0.034

There are probably more phone updates out now, but are not in the list. Best thing to do is download the updater and get it to check if there is a new version.

I hope this helps.

Best,

tp
