While surfing on this very forum via WiFi on my N80 last night, the phone suddenly flashed me the white Nokia logo screen and simply died and wouldn't wake up again. It's really, totally, unbelievably dead right now. No sign of life what so ever when pushing the power button. 😮
During the time of death the only applications running were the Nokia bluetooth keyboard software and the web browser. While reading the forum the browser was also downloading a large mp3 file (80mb+) to the 512mb memory card in the background. I remember noticing the phone being quite warm, but nothing too over the top, I believe. Also, this was done while the phone was charging, so there must have been plenty of juice for it to run on.
Have done the usual works; removed battery, sim and mem card. Tried to charge the battery over night and even tried a different charger today. It's as dead as a stuffed parrot ever could be, and I've had it exactly one month.
My theories:
1) The battery short circuited all by itself or simply died a mysterious and gruesome death
2) The phone fried itself while keeping up with a "power user" trying to do two or more things at once..hmmpf. As ridiculous as it sounds, that's what I'm fearing the most.
Edit: Tested the battery with a voltmeter and it feeds a steady 3.65V out of the 3.7V battery. That leads me to believe it's rather option 2 above that's the case. *sigh*
Really loved the phone, and could even live with the excellent but oh so buggy browser and out of memory crap until next firmware, but this almost makes me have second thoughts...
B.t.w. it happeneded the instant I clicked on the "Symbian OS v9.3" thread here, was that just a coincidence or a sign? 😉
What are your views on this, any similar stories out there??
R.I.P sorry to hear about the death of your close companion
you will be under warrenty, take it to your local nokia service center and they will reflash it for free. take your reciept of course. it worked wonders for my water damage
good luck!

good to hear your N80 is still up and running Knucklskin 😊
You might also try taking the memory card out and try booting that way.
Note: Symbian phones are easily offended. By clicking on the Symbian 9.3 thread it probably though you were implying it was no good.
oh dear i hce feelings for u,
ur N80,
but still life goes on.
be brave and look forward to forget about it and live happilly.
may god bless u.
ur N80 will achive heavens.

R.I.P and Garantee. This for times happens in the Nokias. Already it happened 3 times to me, with 3 different models, 8310 / 7710 / 3230. The first one was a S40 series - with a more easy software than Symbian.
What were you downloading maybe you got a virus..:con?
Absurd. Sorry, but I don't believe that the phone just died.
Tried hard-resetting it, Turn on the power and press Green, * and 3 simultaneously until it boots.
I guess there are many upset people trying to discredit N80. I liked the phone as it is.
I do have to agree on that. I do like the phone and what it's capable of.
Should I demand more, I boot up my laptop.
One phone is only plus one more gadget, until the next one, that gonna be better in everything and plus some thing. Me it does not seem that it has interests to discredit or to support (I at least , I don´t care, is only one more). Now that they can turn off, and never work any more, they can. Already it happened to me for three times... and confirmed by the nokia Service Points, because they had give me a new ones!
First off, thanks for the warm hearted condoleances in these difficult times for a phone geek like myself. Sudden death came so suddenly and deadly, but your confessions about nokia service centers all over the world has made me again invest hope in a brighter future, even without Symbian 9.3. 😊
I have to option to send it off for repair, but I'll rather drive the hour and a half to get it done in real time, if possible, and avoid my package getting used as a door stopper for a few weeks until someone gets working on it (it's vacation month in Sweden!).
nj7: Interesting to hear about your past experiences with mobile death, and recieving new ones as a result. I'd surely be surprised if they get it started with simply a re-flash. I could be totally wrong, of course. I know little about the inner workings of a S60 phone, but a normal computer with a corrupted BIOS or HD will usually at least try to start up and make some discomforting noise. 😊

I sure also tried the green+*+3 format combo, but the phone is, yet, absurdly dead. 😊 I also liked the phone as it was. I just wish to get an answer to why this happened. Because, if it happened once , it could surely happen again and at a worse time.

Well, the thought struck me aswell, at first. But what I was downloading was a fully legal pod cast from the reliable Swedish national radio web site. Besides I've never heard about a symbian trojan that would screw up the phone to the point that a hard reset wouldn't work.
The third option, of course, is that you just have a bad phone that got through the QC, a simple dry joint on the circuit board that worked itself loose could prevent a phone from working.
I didnt yet hear of any other N80 dying like yours did without third party interference
Well good luck with the revival strategy, hope it works for you 😊
And there are no virus for S60 3rd Edition.
Virus' on Symbian in the traditional sense do not exist. You have to agree to install a virus (three seperate prompts I think) and quite frankly if you do this....

Lol, yes, your dry joint comment made me remember the old freezer trick, that sometimes works with "dead" hard drives and such. Supposedly the cold tightens up the metal in bad solder joints and conductors, just enough to make the circuits work as long as they remain cold.
Well, I put the N80 in a plastic bag and put it in the freezer for a few minutes. I kid you not, it booted up. That gave me some precious time to save some some pictures I had taken. Of course, within minutes the phone "died" again.
Evidently, you were right!:icon14: Next stop, nokia service center...

Cool, at least you got some of you stuff from the phone 😊
woow, i would like to see some pics of an N80 in a freezer lol, nice one, nokia service center is the best option
haha, never heard of that actually working. Very brave of you, weldone for trying it.
im gonna put my battery of my sony laptop, cuz its getting drained so fast maybe that will help
_Dx_ wrote:im gonna put my battery of my sony laptop, cuz its getting drained so fast maybe that will help
Hehe, quite frankly, putting a battery in the freezer would most probably weaken its capacity. Battery chemicals are designed to be most efficient in room temperature. Get a new battery and don't keep it in the laptop if you're running it plugged into the wall for long periods of time. Constant battery charging is a slow killer...been there, done that.
A bit off topic, but the same actually goes for phone batteries...

Thats not exactly true, infact for li-ion batteries its the exact opposite, the warmer they are the quicker the become damaged (although it will yemporary improve battery life for that charge cycle), and storing them in the fridge actually helps prolong life 😊
But yes putting them in the freezer would probably damage them
woow good and evil lol
well its li-on well ill give this a try and if this doesnt work ill buy a new one anyway 😃
_Dx_ wrote:woow good and evil lolwell its li-on well ill give this a try and if this doesnt work ill buy a new one anyway 😃
The problem is you cant recondition a li-ion battery, once its damaged or dead or the charge life is crap, it will always remain crap or be worse.
ouch, k ill go to sony service center and ill buy a new one, or ill ebay it
_Dx_ wrote:ouch, k ill go to sony service center and ill buy a new one, or ill ebay it
haha coincidence, my sony battery in my sony laptop is crap also,
lol, damned lion batteries, where can i get a nuclear one?? lol
just have it repair.. no use of complaining.... get your phone back to work ! 😊
Well sorry to say but mine has gone "kaput" this evening too! No real indications apart from a text coming in and i opened the phone only to be greeted by a nice flashy white screen. Just thought huh yet another crash and that was it. Turned it off but nothing. Started to worry then and as the thread creator said went through the usual checks and still nothing. After a few hours of trying I heard the nokia sound but no screen and then 3 downward tones, hard to describe but sounded really funny! Anyhow I gave it a slight nock on the side and the screen came up very dull enough for me to back up the data on the phone. The buttons where all screwd up though, was frustrating but managed to get the backup i needed. Hard reset the phone and contacted orange who informed me that a new one would be with me tommorow (Sunday!!! Yes sunday, itold the CS it was sunday and she said yes i know,,,, we deliver on sunday. She even gave me a time for it to arrive!!!!) Great stuff
Still if anyone knows what that 3 downward tone thing was it would be interesting. (Obviously it was to tell me my phone was having a nervous breakdown!!)🙄
Kind Regards
Scoop
PS
No doubt I will be posting tommorow with a tale of a crappy loose scratched replacement sent to me!!:frown:
