N80 02 upgrades come UNLOCKED ?!?!

20 replies · 4,878 views · Started 15 July 2006

Hi all

I am just waiting to recieve my n80, just dont know when!! 😊

The thing is, I am going ebay... I have this guy, powerseller, 100% - says he recieved an n80 from 02, but says this about it..

"Please note that I have had questions concerning whether the phone is LOCKED to O2!

I am not an engineer and cannot honestly say that the phone is UNLOCKED all networks; all I can say is that the phone does work with O2, T Mobile and Virgin SIM cards because I have tried them in the phone. The phone still boots up with the O2 welcome and displays a fast key lower left on the screen for O2 via I-mode / G3. I merely stated SIMLOCK O2 in the auction listing as a matter of honesty, I'd received the phone from O2 and I could not 100% prove that the phone is UNLOCKED. But it does work with other SIMs."

The thing is... I am from Portugal, we only have 3 major cell companies, and if ANY two sims work on a phone, it is unlocked beyond a reasonable doubt. What about these? Please, anyone, the auctions ends tomorrow....

Thanks very mucho!

😮 forgot 😮

I am on a sub-network of vodafone, from a company merge a long while back, so yes, 100%(fully sim compatible... but if I buy a UK vodafone locked phone, would I be able to put my Portuguese vodafone card in it?

Who wants a free beer on that answer...?

well ive had 3 fones from 02 over the past years and none of them have been locked , and to be honest ive not known n e of my mates mobiles to be locked to o2. i havent tried another sim in the n80 not really needed to

hey 😊 :icon14:

Thank for that return... Another user PM'ed me with almost the identical response... it's just that extra extra bit of certainty I would be hoping to have before that closure tomorrow... arg!:con?

So far, it seem that locked to O2 is not really so... anyone care to rectify this statement?

Also, I've seen many n80 pictures with a pearly, almost Mac-style white. But never in a real live situation/picture. Are they really around? Definitely not silver

the phone wnt b locked to o2 as they dnt lock them anymore! as for the Q bout voda, my friend (frm holland) had a vodafone 6680 and he came over to the uk and i told him to get a vodafone pay and go sim and it did NOT work in his fone, i dnt know y but it didnt, so i went to the voda shop with him to get the unlocking code for his 6680 and they said that only vodafone in holland can unlock it as thats were he got it frm!

A-HA!

Thanks very much!

So it would be safe for me to take in an orphan O2 and adopt it with my sim... cool!

Anyway, I will try to get a completely unbranded one.

What the heck, BEER ALL ROUND, on me... 😎

If I perceived well, we have the probability of the telephones of the O2 not to be closed to the net, is this? And yidakee, You talk about yorn?
Ests a escrever de Portugal?

if u do get the o2 branded n80 just do a SW update and ul have a "generic" n80, it will 100% b unlocked despite the branding, altho, like u said, try and get a unbranded 1 so then atleast u wnt have to flash it!

Perhaps either a regional particularitity but for here, if to come for example with a ROM Vodafone, after new software upgrade, comes in the same one with a ROM Vodafone. The act to make a Upgrade, does not annul the linking to the operator.

Hi Nj7,

Sim, estou na yorn. Ganda abrao! Tuga power loool (nao sou azeiteiro.. 😊

I didn't get that ROM stuff you are talking about though, sorry...

Bigzzy, when u say SW upgrade, SW= software? Sorry, have to catch up with the lingo, been out of comission since my late great 7650... damn, what a revolution that was for me... anyway... when u refer to SW upgrade, thats flashing it right? I was planning to do so. I have been following this forum very closely so as to

1- not ask dumb repetitive questions - seems like the latest craze around here
2- Get up to date, get the phone + good firmware, flash it, pump software into it, and start sharing my mental instability with you all... 😉

I remember whenI used to have my 7650, that this really was a fun fun fun forum to be in. Then I killed it accidentaly, I was so ashamed I just left to never return... now I am back from Nepal and ready to wi-fi  muuuhaahahaha....

sorry about that... I'm on ebay right now waititng for the closure... a bit... exssss.... exssss.. exxxiiiteddd....

Bem vindo, depois do Nepal e do 7650... muito tempo depois.
Welcome back, after Nepal and after 7650... long time after.

I didnt think flashing the phone actually unlocked them, or is this just something with the O2 branded phones ?

by all accounts o2 dont brand fones in the same way voda and orange do

the fones from what ive seen have voda start changing menus , and the icons to web etc. but with o2 its mainly the o2 start up screen , and the background. which once u change the theme to nokia it looks standard. just the o2 boot screen left . no biggy though i mean how many times do u restart yer fone

so are people in this thread saying that its better to have a contract N80 from O2, because if you then flash it you will have an unlocked phone ?

Well, what I make of it is O2 get the phones, splash a fancy exclusive O2 theme, possibly even embedded in its firmware, and issue them.

Sort of like when they branded cows in the far west. They dont change the DNA, just mark them with red hot irons....

So you flash them and they are as good as Hale Berry in my tub....😮

Sorry I dont believe you, I Dont think they would be as good as Hale berry in your tub mate 😊 😊

I wonder if it they branded Hale Berry with a red hot iron... Would I be able to flash her myself?

... :hahaha: just please ignore me....

now seriously... in 10 mins I'll probably be a brand new n80 owner.... eeek!

yidakee wrote:I wonder if it they branded Hale Berry with a red hot iron... Would I be able to flash her myself?

The question is...where would you brand her 😊

YEEEEY!!!

I won. 320 unbranded, fully unlocked.

I dont need Hale Berry now... even without a branding hehe

This is seriously entering the weird nonsense nerdy talk here... lets sound a bit less zitful ... hope I didnt offend anyone... been there, dealt with it, you should too...

Anywhooo... Anyone want a really cheap n90? It's not cosmetically new, but works like day 1. it's on ebay... is it allowed to post personal listings in this forum? 2 days til closure...

NO i didnt mean that flashing an o2 branded n80 will unlock it, i was stating that o2 fones r ALWAYS unlocked! the only thing o2 do is a welcome screen, a theme and shortcuts in the goto menu, and as for SW yes i do mean a SOFTWARE update!
