Mobile Web vs WAP GPRS

OK not really N80 specific and a bit of a n00b question but as i'm new to this...

1) Whats the difference between the 2 default connection options i have on my O2 supplied N80? They are O2 Mobile Web & O2 WAP GPRS.
Is it to do with the billing? :con?

2) Also can i use either to access the internet proper (via the N80's "web" option) as well as WAP/Mobile websites (via the "Services" option)?

3) When i use services and try to access www.bbc.co.uk it sends me to the mobile bbc website (www.bbc.co.uk/mobile) which is mainly text, is this the way it works ie it sends you to a "mobile" or "WAP" website instead of the main one thus saving you bandwidth charges? (if there is a mobile/WAP site available that is, i know eBay dont seem to have one!).

4) Last question...both of the connection options can use either normal EDGE connection or preferably 3G if this is available (and dual or UMTS is selected) asw its faster.....correct?

Thanks for any help! 😃

go into My Own and use that we broswer rather than the one in the main menu, thats the full internet access browser but the other one is a mobile wap browser which is shite 😃

It use to be there was a difference (i.e. you could only access wap pages through WAP GPRS). This might still be the case. I believe they use to be charged differently, but unless you have an old bundle or plan I don't think this is the case anymore.

Use Web to access the INternet proper. For N80 owners it is the My Own folder. You might want to move this to the top level and put Service somewhere else

The redirect is site specific (i.e. a site has to be set up to do it), not all do. ebay mobile @ www.ebaymobile.co.uk - details at http://pages.ebay.co.uk/mobile/

Yes 3G is faster than EDGE which is faster than plain GPRS.

well my operator has internet access and wap access, i cant browse html pages with the wap connection, and i can browse any kind of pages with the internet access conection.

When the traffic goes through an operator's WAP gateway, it may be restricted to what sites can be accessed on the Internet.

Also, the WAP gateway limits the access to various protocols (which means that, e.g., email or instant messaging rarely work with a WAP access point).

Furthermore, many WAP gateways also do reformatting of content (pictures, even HTML/XHTML).

So, for WAP sites, use a WAP access point.

For general Internet web sites, email, instant messaging and other "real" Internet services, use an Internet access point.

Both WAP and full Internet access uses GPRS, EDGE or WCDMA packet data these days (a few years back WAP was possible to use with a circuit-switched dial-up connection, or even an SMS based connection).

Note also that some network operators, like '3' (Hutchison 3G) in the UK operate in, so called, "walled garden" mode, where they might have non-WAP Internet access, but they block standard protocols or access to any site (only allowing access to sites in their list of allowed places where they think people should go).

So for Wap access via the settings browser use the WAP GPRS connection & for proper net access via the Web browser and for sending/receiving email use the Mobile Web option?
Obviously i would use a WLAN connection if available.
