ViewRanger, GPS & N80

For those of you having problems with bluetooth connections to a GPS receiver, just thought I'd let you know that I've been using ViewRanger (with custom map choice for 20 - a doddle to choose & install) successfully with my BT receiver, a SiRFIII. With no connection issues, the program works a dream and provides me with a very nice and portable OS map.

Now all I need to do is get the Navicore S60 v3 upgrade for my road use and I'll be well sorted.

Has navicore released v3 of the navigation software yet, when I emailed them they said they were having problems with the bluetooth stack.

However , Wayfinder works fine, and thats with a bluetooth GPS, and a Parrot Bluetooth carkit, however some of the driving directions are announced a little early (tested on a route this morning), and I would like to see someone do a U-turn half way up a hill.

Navicore announced on the 10th July that they had compatibility with Symbian S60 v3, though I've yet to d/l my upgrade.

My GPS receiver is a GlobalSat SiRF III. I got it when with Navigator when I first bought it for my 9300. A quick Google will find them easily enough (along with a host of other GPS receivers if you search for the SiRF III chipset alone). However, to help, the first one I just Googled can be found at a good price here.

chrsfrwll: When I emailed them on the 11th July they said that the upgrade was not available.

"Thank you for contacting Navicore

It has been unfortunately identified that there are some problems in the
Bluetooth connection between N80 and a GPS receiver. Therefore an
application like Navicore using a Bluetooth GPS connection does not work
in a reliable way. The problem is under further investigation and we
shall add N80 to the list of compatible phones as soon as there is a
solution available."

Oh bumf. That might explain why the N80 isn't listed on their website, only a generic S60 v3. Just as well I didn't try and d/l that.

I wonder if the connection problems are the same I initially experienced with ViewRanger. I emailed support and had to install 3 or 4 different versions, catching error logs to send back as I went along. However they managed to get it sorted in only a day.

Interesting, currently Wayfinder drops the GPS signal when it wants as well.

This behaviour was seen on early N70's as well, but was fixed in firmware revision 5 i believe.

Yep, having championed Viewranger and my GPS receiver, it looks like it's time to eat humble pie [munch munch] coz I too have now suffered the problem of dropped GPS signal via bluetooth.

So, sorry to all I might have mislead during my earlier ramblings, and I join you in the queue for the next firmware upgrade from Nokia, with hopefully a BT fix.

Been using Nav4All (Java MIDP2) on N80 with bluetooth GPS, no dropouts encountered. GlobalSat BT338 SirfStar111.
Just a suggestion, try launch Route 66 BEFORE you switch on bluetooth, then switch on bluetooth from connections. I've noticed this helps the disconnect issue using the N80's own Navigator program ( activated using BestTaskMan) maybe this helps ???
I am waiting til Nokia/Route 66 decide what the problem is, and fix it before I order '66.
In the meantime, Nav4All is doing the job reasonably well, even though it doesn't have 3D or map overlay, and uses gprs data, the kb is minimal.
