You need to convert your video files to a suitable format on your pc first. You can use an application called Super to do that. See here: http://nokiae61.wordpress.com/2006/07/05/watch-movie-on-your-s60-v91-device-with-super-freeware-video-converter/
I was thinking of posting the settings i use for super for good quality files here because the settings given on the link i gave you only produce medium quality video files. I'll maybe do that tomorrow if i can find some time

So here are my settings for Super. Beware *not* to check the "Stretch it" option in the video settings as this will deform the video. Note that these settings are probably not the only settings that work or even the best. Super supports thousands of different settings so there might be better settings than that but these worked really fine for me.
*** Optimized for file size (these are actually taken in part from http://nokiae61.wordpress.com/) ***
Medium quality video, good quality sound (mono), not so smooth playback but small file size (approx. 1.9 MB/min.)
Output container: mp4 (MPEG-4)
Output video codec: XviD
Output Audio Codec: AAC
Uncheck "Use DirectShow" unless you know what you're doing
VIDEO
Video Scale Size: 320x240 (for the E61)
Aspect: 4:3
Frame/Sec: 15
Bitrate: 192
Options: everything unchecked
AUDIO
Sampling Freq: 22050
Channels: 1
Bitrate: 64
DVD language: default
*** Optimized for Quality ***
Excellent quality video, good quality sound (mono), smooth playback, large file size (approx. 3.3 MB/min.)
Output container: 3gp (Nokia/NEC/Siemens)
Output video codec: MPEG-4 (ignore the warning message)
Output Audio Codec: AAC (ignore the warning message)
Uncheck "Use DirectShow" unless you know what you're doing
VIDEO
Video Scale Size: 320x240 (for the E61)
Aspect: 4:3
Frame/Sec: 25
Bitrate: 384
Options: only check "3gp/3g2 v5"
AUDIO
Sampling Freq: 22050
Channels: 1
Bitrate: 64
DVD language: default
Note that i sometimes got an error message at the end of the conversion telling me that there was an error creating the file for some reason. Ignore it, the file is still created and works fine.
If I use a higher bitrate, will I get a better image quality?

Yes but if the phone is not be powerfull engough to handle high bitrates it will start dropping frames. Best is to try. But i've found that with my "optimized for quality" settings the picture was really excellent and unless you look really closely, you can't see the pixels (provided that the original video file was a good quality video of course).
Can anyone confirm what''s the highest bitrate the E61 can handle?
I tried mplayer/mencoder (see http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/HTML/en/encoding-guide.html) to generate E70 compaible clips. Seems like I didn't get the options correct; I selected mp4 container, mp3 audio, mpeg video:
mencoder -oac mp3lame -lameopts=aq=9:cbr:mode=3:br=92 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=180 -ofps 15 -of lavf -lavfopts format=mp4
but it doesn't seem to work.
Which exact program do you use to launch the videos in E70/E61? What ever I try (file manager, media player, gallery) the video clip (.mp4) seems not recognized - ie. the icon is "unknown" for the file, file manager says "unable to launch" immediately (seems like it doesn't even try to open it), media player/gallery don't even list it.
:icon14: luuri professionalllllllllll.
i use xilisoft video converter. what i need is click some button.
its good for me if its easy
it will be better to integrat some paras(bit rate, frame rate.....) for each device.
so chose what smart phone you use( eg.E61), the software will list several group paras. it will be easy to use.
I have a DRM protected video and was trying to see if Super could encode it to play on my E61 but it generated an error. Is it possible to get DRM protected .wmv files to play on the E61? Thanks.

No. Maybe in future models nokia will add this, dunno. In general though, stay clear of DRM protected music and video, it's only going to be an endless source of problems and really not worth it.
