Strange messaging problem: not enough memory to receive messages

26 replies · 19,542 views · Started 24 July 2006

Hi,

Since yesterday, i'm getting really strange warning messages from my E61. 4 times already, a warning message suddently poped up on the phone (while it was just sitting on the table doing nothing) telling me: "Not enough memory to receive message(s). Delete some data first". And a blinking enveloppe icon appears and starts blinking just below the battery indicator.

I really don't know what to think or do. I haven't been able to find anything in the manual about that. I only have 4 SMS in my inbox but even deleting them doesn't change anything, the enveloppe icon keeps blinking. I've got maybe 15-20 emails but that can't be that. I haven't installed or configured any push email client and i haven't set the email client to check for emails automatically. I've set Messaging to store its data in the phone memory and i've got 32MB free on the phone and 70MB free in the memory card anyway. There are no other applications running.

If i restart the phone, the blinking enveloppe goes away but then, a little while later, it comes back together with the warning message. I'm wondering if people are trying to send me SMS but the phone refuses them for some reason. What's wrong? I've run out of ideas here so i would appreciate some help.

Cheers.

I've just sent a SMS to myself and i received it fine even though the enveloppe is still blinking. So it doesn't seem to be related to the SMS. But what then? This really annoys me.

If you haven't done anything that set this off, then perhaps you have a faulty unit? Not much help I know, but I can't really think of anything else that might cause it. :frown:

Perhaps your unit's memory is fragmented? Try shutting down more apps which are running concurrently and a couple of resets should probably cure it I would imagine.

Thanks to you and krisse for trying to help. I hope that this is not caused by a hardware issue though. The fragmented theory is interesting and i hadn't thought of that. I admit that i don't even know how Symbian OS manages its memory but it still sounds odd that this might cause a problem. Anyway, i've restarted the phone again, the blinking envelope went away and hasn't come back yet so you might be right. Let's wait and see.

"Try shutting down more apps which are running concurrently and a couple of resets should probably cure it I would imagine" - Same opinion for me - usually a reset cure a lot!!!

That's very discouraging to see a Symbian device relying on a reboot to work properly. This is one of the great strengths of steering away from PPC and WM. These devices were/are notorious for that and Symbian was always 'rock solid' with reboots needed once in a blue moon. I'm afraid that I find the E61 needs rebooting regularly - or rather that it does it itself, strangely and usually when in Messaging whilst composing a 'Reply' to an SMS. It will just shut off and reboot. (Much like the Sony Ericsson P800 did all the time running UIQ) Now I'm sure some of that's to do with us pillocks being early adopters and if you buy an E61 in a year's time it will be much more stable but it is a bit worrying as this didn't used to happen much.

The symbian, mature devices, are "rock solid"... But like you said, the new phones with new software versions, have always some problems. Only after upgrades they start to work more solid!

I experienced the same problem today. After the first wave of panic about my baby being faulty, I started searching the menu's and experimenting. Apparently, some message (probably sent by the network) has to be stored on the SIM. Just (re)move several messages from the SIM (accessible through Messages/Options/SIM messages) to the phone and the nag will not re-appear.

Thanks for trying to help. I went to the SIM messages section but there are no messages at all there :frown: Yet, i still get this annoying message and blinking envelope every now and then forcing me to reboot regularly (a real shame since the phone is otherwise rock solid and never requires a reboot). I'm still on the lookout for the solution to this problem.

There's a new firmware available for the N80. The list of fixes can be found here: http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum//forum/thread/49979/

And in there, you'll find: "- Envelope icon doesn't stop blinking until phone is rebooted".

So it looks like it's bug that can be fixed via a firmware update. Let's hope the E61 one is not going to take too long to get released.

I think this is a serious bug on this phone. I've been searching other forums for people with this same problem and I've come across a decent number of cases, so I don't believe it to be an isolated case. This memory problem has been driving me crazy, because I actually lose text messages due to the error. After examining the problem more, I think the problem is related to the IM program. The IM program that comes standard on the E62 is extremely buggy. It continues to stay online when you sign it off, and when trying to exit the program it continues to run in the background. In one case, I received the memory error the moment I signed on AIM with my computer. When I hold the menu button to pull up the currently running programs, the IM app is there. Trying to close it does nothing, because it will appear again in 5-10 seconds. I think this is a serious problem that Nokia needs to address. A patch is needed to resolve this problem, whether it is a memory management problem or a poorly written IM client. This is ridiculous, shame on Nokia for releasing a product with such a glaring bug. I hope some attention can be brought to this issue and fixed.

I have the same exact problem with the IM function, I cant remove it , every time I try to exit the program it will pop back up with in 5-10 seconds, I think that is what is causing the delete data error with my txt messaging, I have done 3 hard resets and it works for about 10 minutes and then I get the txt messaging error again. I have no idea how to fix this problem with my e62

I am also having the issue with "memory full" and the IM application trying to launch itself over and over. This started happening literally a minute after I used the built in IM application for the first time. *#7370# resets do not fix it. Even re-flashing the firmware with Nokia Software Updater does not fix it. The only thing Nokia tech support was able to tell me is that this is "not normal" and that I should send it to a tech center to be repaired. There apparently is no solution.

DONT TOUCH THE BUILT IN OZ IM PROGRAM WITH A TEN FOOT POLE. IT WILL BREAK YOUR PHONE!

My friend and I both have E62s - she just got hers and is getting the same problem.
It seems to be a problem with her account or her SIM, because we switched SIMs and the problem followed it to my phone.
One of two things fixed the problem:

  • I did a hard reset of her phone* with my SIM card in it.
  • I logged her out of her AIM account. I didn't just exist the chat client - I logged her off.

Now she receives SMSes just fine. We'll never run the built-in chat client again. I wish I could delete it!

* How to hard reset the E62

Strangely, the problem just seemed to go away for me. I don't have another SIM card to use, but I did a hard reset with no SIM card in the phone and that didnt solve the issue. I got one of those random service messages from Cingular, and after that, the phone decided it did actually have memory free, and a minute later, the IM program stopped re-launching and hasn't appeared since.

I believe there are SERIOUS bugs with the included IM program. I'm also sorry that it cant be deleted. Fortunately there are plenty of alternative (and vastly superior) IM programs available for S60v3, such as Agile and IM+. Both use data rather than SMS, so if you've got unlimited data theres no reason to pay for txt as well.

Thanks to blushy and Werner in the comment of one of e1life's posts (http://e61life.com/?p=154#comments), i have been able nail down this weird problem.

Several people in this thread have reported having a similar problem with their E62 as well but from what i've read it seems that my problem with the E61 and the E62 problem are two different and unrelated problems.

So this is my understanding of what the E61 problem is based on the infromation given by blushy and Werner (i hope i didn't misunderstood them).

First a quick recap of what the original problem was: regularly, a "Not enough memory to receive messages" error message pops up on my E61 along with a blinking enveloppe that keeps blinking in the top status bar. This message doesn't make any sense since i've got loads of free memory on both the phone and the memory card. It's not a RAM issue either since this message sometimes pops up just after a reboot when no application is running. Unlike the E62 problem, this message does not cause me to miss or loose SMSs. It does not cause the phone to behave improperly. It's just extremely annoying to have an enveloppe icon constantly blinking on the screen or to have to reboot regularly just to get rid of it.

Another seemingly unrelated problem i have with my E61 is that i haven't been able to access my Virgin Mobile voicemail when roaming. When i'm in the UK, everything works fine, but when roaming i always get a "You have dialed a wrong number" message whenever i try to ring my voicemail.

It seems that both problems are actually related. When roaming, you can't dial your own number to get through your voicemail as you would do at home. You need a special number. Apparently, network operators send special messages to phone when you're roaming to configure your voicemail properly. These messages are normally processed automatically by your phone and you are not even aware of them. But there seems to be a bug in the E61 which can cause it to fail to process the message somehow and display the "Not enough memory to receive message" error. And as a result, voicemail doesn't work when roaming (but you can configure it manually by ringing your operator's CS).

I can't garantee that this really is the cause of the problem or even that this explanation is accurate but it does make perfect sense to me. The fact that it only occurs when roaming explains why so few people are experiencing the problem while i'm getting those messages sometimes several times a day (i'm living at the border between the
UK and the Republic so my phone often switches to an Irish network). It also explains why i could not get through my voicemail when abroad even though i never had any such problems with my previous phones.

So a temporary fix (until the bug is fixed by Nokia) is:
- either disable voicemail, or
- set your phone's network to "manual" to prevent it from picking up foreign networks and starting to roam when you're getting close to the border. Of course, that won't work if you're going abroad as you'll have no choice but roaming.

Hope this helps anyway.

davekaybsc wrote:Elp, any idea what causes the issue on the E62? Is it the IM program?

I have no idea. The E61 does not come with the IM app which is pre-installed on the E62. Also, as i said, the E61 problem is only an annoyance (the blinking enveloppe icon) but does not cause the phone to work improperly and in particular does not cause problems with receiving SMSs (SMSs are still received fine even when the enveloppe icon is blinking). The E62 problem, from what i've read here, looks more serious. I cannot provide any help here.

Hello elp! I've had the same situation as u. My thought is, its related to the ram. Coz I get the blinking envelope icon as well as that popup when i come to about 3,000 txts in d inbox. My opinion is.. When u have lots to view in one folder, like in the inbox, lots of ram is used up. I can confirm this. By telling in the view of e-mail. If I connect to my e-mail server and download mails that have got attachments and all, I get this very soon! Its got to be related to ram, I tel u. When I download all the mail onto my phone with attachments, lots of ram is used up to keep it ready for viewing. Hope this small bit of information helps!

Ciao.

In my experience, this "Not enough memory to receive messages" error appeared even when I had 0 SMS, 0 MMS and 0 emails in my inbox. I got this messages shortly after having bought my phone and it hasn't stopped since (well, i hope that it'll stop now that i've switch the network to Manual). So this message might be triggered by having too many messages in the inbox as well but that was defintely not the problem I was having.

I had this problem when I got my e62 earlier this week.. not enough memory to receive messages.. plus the IM program popping up whenever it seemed like it wanted to... this is how I was able to resolve the issue. Not sure if this will work for everyone... (if you have lots of contacts and other apps you installed, be sure to back up before doing this)

- First I powered the phone down.
- I removed the battery and the SIM card.
- Replaced the battery and powered the phone back on.
- Performed a 'hard restart' without the SIM card in the phone (*#7370# - and the auth code being 12345)
- Powered the phone back down after the hard restart
- Replaced SIM card and powered the phone back on.

And thats about all. There may have been a warning message or something when I powered back on.. but After all of this, I no longer get the 'not enough memory to receive messages' error.. the IM program runs in the background, but doesn't pop up all the time now.

Hope that helps...

I hope this helps,

In the settings for text there is a default amount of txts the phone or memory card will store/receive, it is set to 20, change this to 200 and you will receive texts to your hearts content(or 200 anyway)

Messaging ->Options->Settings->Other-> No of Saved messages =change number to desired figure.

Hth

I switched off my cell!

removed the sim card

put it in another nokia phone recieved all the msgs there

then after few seconds I put the sim card back in my Nokia N73 which had the memory full unable to receve msgs error)

and now it's working fine!

yipeeeee!
