Mail for Exchange Connectivity

I'd like to set up Mail for Exchange on my E70, but I'm confused about how the connectivity would work. Is Mail for Exchange a normal client like Outlook that must have full network access to Exchange Server (i.e. local WLAN or VPN), or does it connect to some sort of 'push email' extension to Exchange that could easily (and securely) be exposed through a firewall?

I've found the useful article on this site announcing the availability of Mail for Exchange, and mentioning that it uses Exchange ActiveSync. Google quickly found
