The Nokia E70 review - take 2

17 replies · 3,167 views · Started 25 July 2006

After a few technical problems, I just wanted to let people know that I've rewritten chunks of the E70 review and improved its score - it's better than I originally gave it credit for.

Read on in the full article.

slitchfield - "RAM apart though, the E70 is a fabulously specified device that delivers in almost every area it claims to. Is it a phone? Is it a communicator? Is it a camera or music/video player? It's all of those and more and gets my whole hearted approval."
Now, completely it is lined up with MobilCZ! Both said that E70 is a great device. I start believe... But like you said we shoul stay 5 minutes in a shop with the phone, because I had do that, and is... strange... the two parts of keyboard. And the two side ears, dont do a clean design... And, question of personal taste, without FM radio... is not a all in one phone!

FM radio? Do you know, I thought that was a cool feature on my N70. Which I had for nine months. And I NEVER USED IT ONCE. I'm sure it was a great radio, I just never got round to it. 8-)

You'll have to content yourself with Wi-Fi grabbed podcasts. Start with TPN Rock!!

Steve

I said, is a question of personal taste... But for me is on, all days... I use the FM radio a lot! And is not practical run from one hot spot to another in search of rdio... But if is not the case, I may stay with that E70, because the screen, and the battery, the same as N-Gage QD, with lot of juice. Lets see N93 and 73... also a good battery inside (I think).

You say that you can use a bl5b in place of the bl6c. Is a similar swap possible with the N70? I know theres a little more space behind the battery cover, but will this be compatible?

Cheers
Tom

Ooh, no idea. I haven't got the N70 any more, so I can't check. Good idea though - I suspect it won't quite fit but I'm happy to be proved wrong.

Steve

Steve - Can you please explain what you've written here in a different way? I don't quite get what you mean...

"I also found the positioning of the main applications/menu button to be rather odd - being next to the bevel of the main body of the flip, it didn't stand out enough and was hard to find and press with my thumb."

...thanks.

Tim

Hi Slitchfield, Hi AAS-Guys ..

I'm quite new here, been reading lots on your site and now joining AAS Forum!
Since i'm a full time Symbian Freak i haven't that much time to join your forum so far  Sorry for that ..

So do you think E70 would be good move!? i read your review and tried to figure out all Specs .. i own 6680 and E61 now by the way and want to change ASAP .. :frown: E70 is at the moment my final decision, maybe i get it next week .. May i ask about the joystick? How you get along with it so far!?

So much for that time .. Lookin forward for replies ..

Regards
BB 😊

BeerBong - welcome to AAS!

I thought the joystick was OK, however it does get a bit slippery. What is it you don't like about the E61 - the same may apply to the E70. I think the E70 is under rated by a lot of people. Its not perfect but the form factor is very interesting and its a very capable device.

actually for me, the biggest lack is the missing cam.. i can't help, i thougt i can manage it with having my lovely 6680 always with me, but it didn't work out .. i need a all-in-one device .. 🙄
and yes .. you are VERY true about the form factor .. i owned 6820 once and LOVED the idea with the QWERTY keypad .. but it was non symbian so i sold it and got 6630 instead .. i always thougt about Full symbian phone with flap form ..

If you liked th form factor on the 6820 and want a camera I'm sure you'll like the E70. As far as I'm concerned if you live with the form factor it is one of the best power smartphones out there. Between the camera, WiFi, candybarness, 3G, email support, qwery keyboard it doesn't have a lot of competition. It's not for everyone, but I think it will have a number of ardent fans.

Steve

I was trying to get you to rephrase that sentence as I didn't understand what you meant by "next to the bevel" and whether your comment was still in 'wings open' mode or not. I now have my hands on one of these and if you mean 'flip closed', the Menu button is square in the middle top and is no problem, so I guess you must mean when open and it being bottom left, very small. In which case, I agree. It could have been more prominent. I actually like the joystick. But then I prefer them to joypads (maybe because of big fingers/thumbs) and think it works positively and well. I was surprised at how light the unit was. Very light - at first it seems to psychologically offer a lack of confidence in build quality but the more it's used, the confidence grows - especially with the solid flip mechanism. I'm still playing but these are first thoughts. Great to have a camera again!

I still have my N70 so can check this for you tonight. Give me a shake if I forget!

I've since had a bit of a look on google to see what people think. Some people claim they have been able to replace the bl5c (got it wrong the first time round) with a bl6c, with only minor problems of the case being a bit tight.
I'm currently fighting the urge to splash out a fiver for a bl6c on ebay, and try it out. The only thing that worries me is if I cant get the case off again or it interferes with the camera slide.
Incidentally, it should bring the battery life up to about the full 2 days I'd like to get out of the phone.

Its possible to fit the BL6C in N70. I have donne once. But is a great effort from the back case, and maybe could damage the phone itself. And, if it stays long time inside, maybe, tha back case becomes untied!

...on reflection and after reading the last two posts, I don't think I will be trying this out for you Tom!
