I've been fiddling with my E70 for more than a month now. Browsing the web is wonderful, with the exception of an error message popping up saying "Memory full... blahblahblah". Happens when I load up a page with lots of pics like blogs. I have a 1Gb memory card. Is there anyway to tell the phone to use that available space? I've searched the threads about this problem since I came across it 2 days after buying the phone. Decided to register and post for help as I have no idea what to do anymore.
"Memory full" error on E70

This error has nothing to do with the amount of storage space you have on your phone or memory card.
Just like PCs, smartphones have 2 kind of memory: storage memory used to store your files and programs (that's your memory card and there is also 64MB of storage memory in the phone itslef) and RAM memory in which programs are loaded when they start and used by these programs to store all the temporary data they need while they're running. There is approximately 20MB of free RAM when you start your phone on the E70. As you launch more and more applications, the amount of free RAM goes down (unless you exit the applications instead of letting them running in the background) until there isn't any free RAM available in which case you get this "Memory full" error. With the E70, there is another problem too: when you open the keyboard, it seems that 7MB of RAM or so disappear, leaving very little memory for the other programs to execute.
If you want to monitor the amount of free RAM left on your device at a particular point in time, use the BestTaskMan application (it's a commercial application). To avoid these "Memory Full" errors, close the keyboard and try not to let too many programs running in the background. Unfortunately, the web browser is quite memory hungry so you might still get these errors when loading large web pages even if there are no other applications running on your phone.
Thanks for the info. Would it help if I used Opera Mobile instead? I've been searching for alternative browsers and that seemed the best option so far. If I'm not mistaken, the Nokia browser is based on the Opera browser but with minor changes. Btw, is the 20Mb RAM allocated to the phone part of the 64Mb total or is it separate? I'm asking since I've installed most of my programs on the phone memory itself.
Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Symbian OS; Series 60/0610.04.04; 7439) Opera 8.60 [en])
Opera mobile is expensive but far better than nokia's web browser in my opinion. I do not know whether it uses less memory though but there's a 30 days trial version so you can try.
Nokia's web browser is not based on opera but on Apple's Safari web browser, which is itself based on the KDE web browser.
And, no, the RAM is not part of your phone's storage memory. It's a different memory chip alltogether. But it's still a good idea to leave a few MB of memory free on your phone's storage memory as applications need to store data on it such as configuration files. If you fill up your phone's memory with applications and files, strange things might start to happen
Thanks again. I think I'll give it a try. Cheers!
I just tried "Opera Mobile", the E60 version is suitable for E70 and it is much better than the original Nokia web browser but it is too expensive
Yes, I agree. $30 for a mobile browser is too expensive. I'll just wait for another browser or for the price to drop. Until then, I'll enjoy my trial version!
What about Opera Mini? Free. Is a JAVA apllication... But like others JAVA, is a memory hungry!
Yeah, I've heard about that as well. According to another thread in the forum, it is not as powerful as Opera Mobile. Do you know the differences in performance?

You are right :icon14:
The Opera-mini is not powerful and not user friendly. I deleted it after I tried for a short period (a few minutes) :icon13:
You may try it as it is a freeware~
Have anyone tried the Thunderhawk Symbian browser. It is a unique browser of it's kind for series 60 phone, needs less memory, desktop experience and very fast. But. it is not free.
Unfortunately, web browsing's simply very RAM-intensive. Even the Services WAP/HTML browser needs the best part of 6MB 8-(
If only Nokia had put more RAM in each device. Anyway, you simply have to recognise that if you run up a web browser then everything else will close in the background, and that if you want to run Web on an E70 then DON'T DO IT IN LANDSCAPE MODE 8-)

The best way, useless because of little RAM.:icon13:
Try many methods, finally the best way is to make use of "Opera Mobile" instead of the internal nokia browser.
Opera Mobile 8.85 is just announced. It works fine on my E70 :icon14:
What about a Virtual memory App to create a swapfile?
Is there any software to allow this?
You could then use your SD card as RAM.
Anything out there ?
Thanks for all the input. Opera Mobile is abit pricey at $30. That would be my last resort. Would be nice if there was some kind of swap file option. I've got a 1Gb card and there's still plenty of space left in it. Anyone out there know of any virtual memory apps?
No. Running virtual memory into a flash disk drive would quickly destroy it. Flash memory is only able to be altered a fixed number of times.
I'm optimistic that the next E70 firmware update will give us all another 4MB or so of RAM.
Steve
Hm... 4Mb isn't much, but I'll go for it. Are such firmware updates easily done? I mean can any end user do it or do I have to send it to Nokia and get charged ridiculous fees for a 5 minute job?
What gonna be destryed? The SWAP file or the flash memory? Because Flash memory, could be used a number of times, on scale of millions times... more then the duration most of time of base equipments, like DSC or phones.

Firmware updates can (soon) be done using Nokia's new online tool.

It wouldn't take long to reach those sorts of figures if you were using flash memory like RAM. And anyway, there would be a big speed hit.
Increasing free RAM on the E70 by (say) 4MB, along with memory optimisations for the landscape switch and web browser, would make a huge difference, IMHO.

What do You know about microSD?
I mean, when was created, has the porpose of been used in two ways, like normal flash memory (like on 3250) and like RAM memory... at least was the announced intention (seems that Motorola want to use that way). I remenber when that was lanuched, to read, that it gonna make possible to increase the RAM memory of devices by change the microSD inside the device, independent of microSD used like flash memory (on service points, like the RAM of PCs).
I realise today, that thing, is not talking anymore.
Why? Is not possible or the makers of devices dont want to do that kind of thing?
Hmm... Online firmware update? That sounds simple enough. I'll be looking forward to that. Especially if they DO optimise the landscape mode. Currently the Looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong delay during the switch makes me think twice about whether or not to use the keyboard.
Even if the MicroSD could be used as RAM, it is useless to me as my E70 uses SDmini. So, I guess the whole RAM expansion thingy is quite improbable.

For E70 and today devices, forget... not possible.
