😞 I have just finished reading the white paper on the P800. On page 64 the pc requirements are given. The Operating Systems supported are Win 2000, Me and XP. Unfortunately, I use Win 98 and upgrading to XP would be too daunting with all the drivers I would have to locate and different hardware that would not be supported. (I have already looked into it). My computers are about 2 years old and I cannot afford to get new ones. I am very disappointed, this seemed like the ideal phone/pda for me. I may have to go with the Kyocera 7135. I will continue to read this board in the hopes that there would be a workaround.
Wrong Operating System
I think the only problem should be your missing USB connect for the cradle. But I am not sure. Perhaps you should jump to Win2k.
Quite the same upgrade path I have done from win98 to win2K just for the sake of USB support (needed to connect to my digital camera and upcoming P800) and P800 SDK compatibility.
I also mannaged to do it on the cheap buying a second hand PII-450MHz.
USB support nowadays is a must-have feature, as much as having a CD-ROM I would say.
Also bought a 39EUR 6-in-1 flash card reader so that I can read both cards from the digicam (CF) and from the P800 (MS2) or even drag & drop files/images between the 2 cards.
i think you should buy a new pc with XP not only because of the P800
windows 98 is very old now
My advice,go to win2k,XP is too user friendly 😊
😮ops: I have Win 98 SE. Both the desktop and laptop have USB (1 not 2), and firewire ports which I installed myself. Is there another reason the P800 doesn't support Win 98SE?
I am really trying not to upgrade the OS yet because Microsoft's new OS Longhorn goes to beta in 2003, and should be ready by 2004 (well maybe). Supposedly this new OS will use an entirely different file system. No more FAT or NTFS, and will require all new hardware. That is when I hope to buy a new computer.
Thanks to all for your input.

Win 98 SE is still the best windows I've used 😉
At least Win98 has all the drivers ...
WIN98 does support USB - I am using it on my laptop (USB 1.0) to connect the SD/CF card reader cradle to download images taken with my digital camera. It works like a charm too.
I also use FireWire with W98 and have edited long movies on my DV camera - quite impressive, really.
W98 is not stable, I must admit. But it has all drivers known to man...
The reason P800 uses W2K and XP to communicate (are you certain of this info?) must be elsewhere - try emailing SE tech support directly regarding this and then post the answer here.
Titanium
