N80, bluetooth and GPS connections

Whilst Nokia delay the release of a suitable fix for the BT connection problem, its nice to see one developer has taken the bull by the horns and, rather than throw their hands up in the air and say Its Nokias problem, we cant help, try and work out why the connection is being dropped and what can be done about it to get things working.

Ive been testing ViewRanger for a while now and although I suffered problems with the BT connection being dropped, on contacting ViewRangers support team, they set about resolving the problem. Ive been sent various different versions, each with logging enabled, which has enabled them to track down the problem and, more importantly, work out a fix. Well, really a fudge, as the problem is still there (it is after all Nokias problem!). What theyve done is get the program to monitor the connection status and as soon as it is dropped, force a reconnection between the N80 and the GPS receiver. Great, so now my mapping software wont hang or crash or get lost, with its ability to actively monitor the connection status between the N80 and the GPS receiver and then force a reconnection when needed.

Whilst it night not be ideal for all applications, it gets round the problem and during the last two outings, I had the mapping software know where I was for 2 hours. The worse downtime I suffered was 1 minute while the software rebooted the connection automatically. Fantastic.

Er, why wont the other software developers be this helpful and do this? Kudos to ViewRanger

Sounds like a set of developers with that rarest of qualities, Common sense.

Well done ViewRanger as you say!

Nicely solved problem by ViewRanger!

But from what I understand, ViewRanger is not a traditional GPS navigator program. It navigates via a GPS module through hills, heights and other surroundings, but is not giving directions in roads and streets by the help of road maps.

Also, it seems only prepared for use in the UK.

Corrections are welcome, if I miss something!

Correct. It is not a SatNav program in the current "motoring" use of the terminology. Whilst it will show streets, it won't give you directions to a destination, nor show street names. Instead it provides UK OS maps on your N80 and allows satnav using these (licenced) maps. It is primarily aimed at walkers, bikers and the like.

(It also shows you a very nice 3D rendering of your "view" from any point and allows you to take pictures and attach them to a specific location, such that you can see what that location really looks like when you view the map again.)

My point was that, unlike the other SatNav developers, who have just shrugged and said "not our problem" when the bluetooth issue first arose, the folks at ViewRanger were proactive in sorting out how the problem could be overcome.
