Nokia N80 Data Charges

I have the nokia n80 on the orange network. I went to Spain about 2 weeks ago and took my phone with me. It was mainly to use the camera function. I was using the internet when i was there, not a great deal. When you are in Spain it costs 8 pounds per mb. When i got home i found out that i had used 22 mb on the internet. This is virtually impossible!!!!!!!!!!! You get 20 pages per mb of full internet. That would mean that i would of had to use the phone almost on a costant basis to use that kind of bill. When it says that you have a full packet conection would that mean that i am using the internet all the time while i was in Spain ?????????????

didnt u get the 1000 mb free browsing??? ring em up an ask them about it as u shud av got it, not sure if u can use the free brousing over seas tho!

This pees me off to read this - Orange must have made so much money out of this. What firmware have you got? Mine did exactly the same thing before I upgraded it. Get onto Orange and demand a refund.

listen carefully to what I say, follow instructions completley, and you will get your money back!

Phone customer support (only if you havent already...) And tell them you have a problem with your N80.

You:

Ive been using my N80 to access the internet whilst at home, using my WiFi router, and at WiFi hotspots. The browser on the phone is set to WiFi only, but i have noticed sometimes the 3G data symbol has been connecting..

After receiving my bill i have noticed that I have been charged for using your internet, but i have never intended to use your internet at all. It must be a bug in the software. The charges are ridiculous etc..

They should give your money back. If they 1st person who you speak to sais theres nothing he/she can do.. ask to speak to her supervisor/manager. They will sort it no problem.

Then: Be more bloody careful! I didnt realise how much i had used in my first month, have barely used it since!!

My N80 always connects to Orange GPRS when I turn the phone on. In the options menu it says 'Only when needed', but it's always on. Whilst you're only charged when you use it, I would rather it was only turned on when I needed it, as I rarely use GPRS.

Does anyone know how to stop this happening like this?

Were you answering yes to the prompt after taking pictures? BAsically Orange shove their own photoapp on that offers to upload your picture after each shot, I bet you were accidentally selecting this either by not knowing what it was actually doing or by just clicking past it and teh defualt setting being to upload.

I would kick off at Orange as it is their software that is doing this without making it clear that it involves a data charge. (POint out that their photo app is not covered in detail in the user manual supplied so you were not aware of its functionality.

Im having this problem too upgraded the firmware made no difference it still connects by itself, is there any f*****g way to stop this before i stamp on the damn thing?:con?

I know what you guys mean, my n80 which is on the orange network will always try to connect to a 3G network, even when i dont want it to..ie 3G symbol pops up now and again....when I was abroad it was constantly picking up 3G points as the local network...my fone is upgraded to the lasted NSS firmware VER 4xx.xxx.42, but ive changed it to generic as I bought the phone of a mate so not worried about warranty issues as basically I aint got any....... I am also on a virgin equivalant taffif with orange and as such do not have GPRS data calls enabled in my tarrif..(which may be a good thing reading the above posts) I was thinking of getting an add on data bundle 4 for 4mb but not too sure now.........Anyway my point being I have no data package enabled on my taffif and it still polls for GPRS data when i dont want it to.....I think the only reason I hav`nt beeen charged silly ammounts is because i dont have this option enabled in my taffif, cant say I really miss it thou as I can pick up wifi at nearly most places...... I think apps like catalogs and services etc will always use GPRS data as a default even if you tell it not to, sometimes it just connects without telling you through which access point...😊 or can someone tell me different.😎

The 3G symbol only means it is using 3G instead of GSM to make calls... The symbol being there DOES NOT mean you have an active data connection on that service.. It is irrelevant as to if it is using 3G or GSM/GPRS, the data costs are the same.
The sign of an active data connection is the dotted line below the 3G or GSM symbol going solid.
I doubt very much that the phones are connecting to the network by themselves. Check you are not running apps in the background that are accessing the net (Hold down symbian key).

Also 20pages of internet does not = 1mb.. It really depend upon the content. Lots of pictures means more MB's....

A few tips.... After internet session, go into the logs and view the data transfer. You will then see what you used. (N80 IE has better logging of all the connections you have made).
Also after browsing, go into the active data connections setting, and make sure that there is nothing active. If there is, then disconnect.
To reduce usage abroad, also disable the 'show pictures' option in the browser.

It does sound like its the photo app thats responsible for this. However it does say in the t&Cs that you must have agreed to (I know we all click accept without reading them properly) that a data charge will be applicable. I flashed mine generic firmware as it was bugging the heck out of me. I've taken my N80 to Spain and to croatia this year and I had zero data charges for that time despite teh icon sometimes showing it was holdinga 3G connection.
