E61 Search Contacts by Company?

17 replies · 7,059 views · Started 09 August 2006

I noticed when I sync'd all my info from Outlook(ExchangeServer) It counted all my contacts, 1238 in all, but some of them seemed to be missing, what i found out is that for some reason they are ALL sorted by either first or last name not Company Name like in other phones.

I have a lot of contacts that i only know by company name, how can I search by the Company name and not the person?

Thanks
G

I just tried this and it searches by company name OK. Just start typing in the box. It doesn't really matter how they're sorted does it, as long as you can search the database? However, if they're actually missing that's something different. I use Outlook 2003 but not the Exchange version.

Hi Tim

You mentioned that one can search for company names on an E61 in the text search box.

I tried it on mine and could not get the phone to list the people in a specific company. I have approximately 3000 names in my contact list.

Please could you help.

Shailendra

Don't really understand what you mean. If the people's names appear in the 'name' fields in the contact, then they'll be searchable surely? I wonder if having 3000 entries might have something to do with it!! It is rather a lot. I have about 500.

Tim

What we mean is contacts that have company names associated with them dont seem to be searchable by the company name, just the persons name.

I have tons of contacts that I have no clue what the persons name is, only the company, so I am unable to find them.

G

And as I have said, I have the same (entries with no name but a Company Name only) yet they *are* searchable so I don't know why yours is different I'm afraid.

Anyone else feel like saying what the case is for their E61?

Tim

Hi Tim

You seem to have resolved the problem of searching contacts by Company name. Can you help us by posting your screen dumps of the search. It may help us understand the way you use the search.

To clarify the problem; I store a name "John" and Jhon works for Company XYZ. I want to search for company XYZ and I am unable to do it.

Thank you for your patience.

I think that when GuardianZX9 writes "I have tons of contacts that I have no clue what the persons name is, only the company, so I am unable to find them.", Tim reads this as "I have no name in the contact, only the company", which is why he gave you that answer.

Indeed, filling just the company name and not the persons name let you search the contact by company name. So maybe it's a step toward the solution (i.e. simply delete the name of the person, or better, put it in a note field in that contact entry) so that you can find it using the (limited) builtin search function of the Contacts application?

I do confirm that on my E61, too, entries with both the person name and the company name aren't returned by the search if your criteria is the company name, whereas entries with only the company name are included in the resulting list.

I hope this helps (and I hope I correctly understood what Tim meant!) 😉

euroclie: Thanks for clearing this up - you were exactly right with your understanding of the misunderstanding (!) as I created a bogus contact with first name, surname, company name and phone number and sure enough searching on the company name doesn't bring it up. Remove the person's name and up it pops in the next search. Thanks. Not really an answer to G's problem though. Perhaps something else for Nokia to pick up and address in a FW update?

Tim

Mobile Search works great and it is pretty fast, it seems to search any field in contacts and pretty much everything else.

I think that not being able to search contacts just because multiple fields are used is a Major oversight by Nokia, this is a totally basic function as found in many other mobile phones.

What I've done is create a "group" for the different companies and categories to which my contacts would belong to, ie: Family, Friends, Personal, Co. A, Co. B, etc. and then adding contacts to the corresponding group. Makes for quicker searches and I keep my contacts organized.

Rather than allow the perceived shortcoming of the app. limit how I work I look for what the app brings and make it work for me. Still waiting on Papyrus though. Just my thoughts...😊

This is so unfortuante for me I could not believe this when I found out it couldn't search Companies. Does anyone think this WILL be an update on the next version of Firmware?

Also what is the best place to email Nokia, they have so many departments... Business Software? Nokia Software Market? Nokia Tech Support?

While waiting for Nokia to include " Find" in their option, we can add coy name in the "Name", so if we can search by coy name .
Ex : John - IBM or whatever

This is a most annoying problem. I can confirm that company name is un-searchable on my E61. If a first/last name exists along with a company name, only those are searchable, while an entry with just a company name will be searchable as well.

An interesting quirk I've noticed: if you happen to be composing a new email (I use Mail for Exchange) and click to add recipients from the addressbook, the search bar actually does search through company names. It's very strange.
