I've noticed that the reception with my N80 is very unreliable. Occasionally, I will notice that it says there is no coverage at all, and the phone will not make calls or send texts. Reception will not come back, whereever I move with the phone. However, if I switch it off and then back on again, it comes back with full reception.
Is anyone else having this problem?

Do you have latest firmware ?
The firmware version is 3.0617.0.6 and I'm on Orange. I'm not sure if this is the latest or not.

It is the latest..I know the N80 reception isn't as good as other nokia phones, but I never heward the problem you have where you loose signal then have to turn phone off/on to recover the signal.
I would get a replacement from orange if I was you.
Orange have had problems recently at their end, its probably due to them.
I experienced it the other day when orange's network went down.

Is there no option in the phone to roam to another network when the orange network goes down so at least you can check ?
i used to work for customer services for t-mobile and when customers had reception issues we advised the following:
- remove the battery from the phone while the phone is still switched on.
- replace battery after approx 10s
- switch on phone
as far as i am aware, this sends an instruction for the phone to look for another cell (ie phone mast). may be the case that when your phone was using another cell, it might not have trasnferred to your nearest and strongest cell and is 'stuck' on the other one which is a poor signal.
worth a bash/.

Thats funny you should say that. I've just spoken to another Orange customer who have had exactly the same problem as me, and they aren't even using a Nokia phone. It may be time to give Orange a call I think.
I have exactly the same problem with mine on Vodafone...not only is signal strenght cr@p compared to other handsets..i have the intermitent signal prob now..
I got it when it first came out so am on fairly early firmware..i guess updating will resolve the intermitent prob?
Thanks

Actually, I have seen this network error on numerous Symbian phones, dating right back to the Nokia 7650. I have experienced the issue only once in the last 4 months on my N80, but it definately can occur.
I think if there is no reception after about an hour the phone gives up looking for a signal (to save battery life?)
An alternative to switching off and on would be to change to OFFLINE profile then back to GENERAL.
I have to say also that I find reception on this is not so good as with my old 7210. This is with GSM reception. Orange refuse to let me have a 3G sim because I bought a sim free phone so I can't even connect to 3G 😡
I find the main problem is the reception fluctuates between full bars to nothing frequently.
What you can do though to make the phone search for another cell is try using the Network selection option under Tools->Settings and manually search for a network, pick your operator and it might re-initialise. You may need to set it back to automatic if you move between cells, not sure, and would need to if you roam internationally.

That's outrageous!! 😮
I bought mine sim free and simply rang O2 and told them to supply me with a 3G SIM. It arrived the next day (for no charge).
well ive sent my N80 in for repair (with O2) because im constantly missing calls and getting txts hour (sometimes days late)
i really used to love this phone, and i could put up with all the niggles, but not this. this is a fucking phone and i can hardly make calls on it which is its primary use, hence the name PHONE.
if it hasnt changed after repair i will be getting rid quickly, very quickly!
and yes i have version 4 firmware, which it actually seems to have got worse since, even though it was bad enough before.
at first i thought it was cos i was i dual mode and it was trying to switch between 3G and 2G all the time, but ive had it in GSM only now for a month and it hasnt improved whatsoever.
Great.
This stuff is common with every 3G phone. Networks here in the UK have awful 3G coverage. At peak times coverage is inconsistent due to high usage.
The problem is even on 2G networks though. My phone is just set to GSM only and still the reception isn't so good as my old phone.
yes as he says, this is a 2G problem not 3G.
My phone has been on GSM only for over a month and im constantly getting messages on 901 where people have rang and its gone straight to answerphone even though my phone is on and in my pocket.
i often pull my phone out of my pocket, look at it and it has no signal, then after 3-4 seconds the signal will go to at least half if not full. just cos its not in my pocket! i've never known a phone to do this, its ridiculous!
It's like the angle of the phone affects the signal perhaps?
I have had an N80 in Australia for about 5 weeks now and I find the reception extremely poor. I also find the phone will go from almost full bars to no reception without moving the phone. My last phone was a Nokia 6280 and I had no reception problems with that phone. I am sick of the phone continually dropping out or breaking up while I am talking to someone, it has got to the point where people say to me ring me back on a landline because they find the conversation so difficult. I have a numerous number of calls going straight to my message service because the phone is not receiving a signal. At home I can put my 6280 next to my N80 with the same network sim cards in both phones and the N80 will have no reception and the 6280 will have almost all bars displayed. Very disappointed with this phone.
I'm also having the same problems with reception and I'm on O2!
I have tried and tried to percivere with the phone but now I'm missing calls and texts, it's just not on! Thankfully I have full insurance with my phone so will be able to break my contract next month and get rid of my N80!
It's sad really 'cause it had/has the potential to be a great phone!
Really disappointed!
:frown:
Today, I made a test and compared my SE K600i and my Nokia N80 in the same reception environments. The N80 was much better! (I don't know if there's something wrong with my K600i, but I have no other reason to believe so.) K600 had 75 % reception in my apartment with one operator and N80 100 %. I changed operator card and K600 had absolutely nothing and N80 had one or two bars. I consider it a clear difference. When I held my K600 out the window, I could get one bar of five. Then N80 had four (or five!) bars of six.
But K600i was much faster in adjusting, i. e. switching between GSM and 3G and back. N80 can be annoyingly slow. I miss calls in my apartment, because it doesn't switch to GSM fast enough when the 3G reception isn't good enough!
I'm going against the trend here..... the signal on my N80 is better than that on my 6230i or previous phones.
I always get a reasonable signal when my daughter is going mad trying to get a signal on her Mororola Razr even though we're both on Orange
My N80 will make a call with just 1 bar showing wheras my previous Nokias were very hit and miss.
i guess ill see what mine is like when its back from repair.
but im like scatty, have full insurance, so if no improvement, its going im afraid. pathetic.
Hi i know this thread is abit old but just recently my N80 here in Malta is losing the network reception causing me to either restart or change from dual mode to GSM which causes the phone to automatically restart and then the network is back like normal!!!
I noticed that these problems are occuring ever since the network operator introduced 3G lately, and the phone changes to 3G automatically however sometimes when i am in my garage i lose reception,(thats normal as it is underground and also other phones lose reception) but when i come out again the phone simply doesnt find the network again.
Before my operator intoduced the 3G it used to find the network without any problems what so ever, iam just guessing it might have something to do with the operators network. However it isnt reliable that this happens as people cannot reach you if you are expecting an important call, don't know what might solve this problem.

Well, as I wrote, I have discovered the same thing. Although, after the N80 has lost its reception completely (due to a too weak 3G signal), if finds it (gsm or 3G) again after approximately two minutes. Those two minutes are way too long. So you can hurry it up by chosing network manually iirc.
I've bought the N95 now. It has much of the same problem. Although I'm not sure that you have to wait so long before it finds a network again.
And one big advantage of N95 in comparison with N80 is that you can lock it to type of network (3G, gsm) without restarting the phone. Very nice.
