N80; the things that annoy me

21 replies · 4,212 views · Started 15 August 2006

I thought these might be useful for someone somewhere.... Coming from an ex Windows Smartphone user (c500), here are my top gripes on the n80, and my advice? The N80's a great phone, with some (IMO) fundamental flaws - stick to your smartphone.

I realise that some of these points may be user error - but I blame this on the appauling manual that comes with the phone, I also don't claim to have tried everything, or to have fully explored all options. Sorry if this offends any RTFM fans. If anyone has answers/work-arounds for the below issue, I'd love to hear them - I've got to live with this phone for 17 months now!

Battery life; not the complete lack of necessarily, but the fact that sometimes it lasts 2 days, and others it barely lasts a day (with comparable usage)

Messaging;

Key lock; on the Power button - too easy to turn off when trying to lock

Key lock; automatic locking after inactivity after closing would be nice (rather than using 3rd party tool)

Contacts; Why can't I search using t9 to recognise names (e.g. 745 to find someone beginning with "RIL", rather than 777444555)

Syncing; Slow, not dynamic (scheduled snycs only)

Syncing; Why does the phone feel the need to prompt you for the type of sync when you connect, with a menu that you can't hide

Wifi; Setup overly complicated, and across too many settings and screens (esp. with secure networks). Manual doesn't help here at all

Wifi; No easy way to turn this off, or activate a flight mode

Apps; What's with the 2 web browsers (may be Three specific).

Apps; When using web browsers you can't 'change connection' until it's loaded a page using the default connection

Apps; When using Services browser, opening bookmarks defaulted to a WiFi that's out of range, there doesn't seem to be a way to get it to change connection (see point above)

Log; why can't I call a number from the Log screen?

Manual (Nokia); shocking. just shocking.

That incredibly bright blue light which lights up a room every 10 seconds.

SD slot: Frequent loss of memory card
General bugs (probably Three specific):

Persistence of divert symbol when going from 2G back to 3G (clears when you check status of diverts).

Inconsistency of missed call icon. (occasionally the main screen missed call icon disappears, but the 'sub-screen' mini missed call icon stays - goes with reboot).

Web Browser crashing - present for both browsers, and fairly frequent
Hi, answers to some of your questions that I know about

1. Battery life; not the complete lack of necessarily, but the fact that sometimes it lasts 2 days, and others it barely lasts a day (with comparable usage)
Battery is a mismatch for the phone and as such untill a new battery is designed with higher capacity but same size then we have to put up with it
2. Messaging;
Dont know what your problem is with messaging..you need to expand
3. Key lock; on the Power button - too easy to turn off when trying to lock
4. Key lock; automatic locking after inactivity after closing would be nice (rather than using 3rd party tool)
There are 3rd party tools for all configurations of locking the keypad, and some are free...there is even an app that will lock the keypad automatically when the slider is shut
5. Contacts; Why can't I search using t9 to recognise names (e.g. 745 to find someone beginning with "RIL", rather than 777444555)
Cant be done as far as I know
6. Syncing; Slow, not dynamic (scheduled snycs only)
Dont use too much but ok for me
7. Syncing; Why does the phone feel the need to prompt you for the type of sync when you connect, with a menu that you can't hide
8. Wifi; Setup overly complicated, and across too many settings and screens (esp. with secure networks). Manual doesn't help here at all
I find wifi set up quite easy, I just set the phone to always ask and then it searches for available networks and you can choose which one to connect to
9. Wifi; No easy way to turn this off, or activate a flight mode
Apparantly the wifi cant be turned off..I dont know how this effects use in plane, but flight mode is quite easy to activate, press on/off button and choose ofline mode
10. Apps; What's with the 2 web browsers (may be Three specific).
I dont have 2 browsers on my N80..just the Nokia one...like you say maybe network specific
11. Apps; When using web browsers you can't 'change connection' until it's loaded a page using the default connection
Not sure what you mean...can you expand
12. Apps; When using Services browser, opening bookmarks defaulted to a WiFi that's out of range, there doesn't seem to be a way to get it to change connection (see point above)
Again not sure what you mean but can you change to ask always
13. Log; why can't I call a number from the Log screen?
I can call nubers in my log screen by selecting number and pressing send key
14. Manual (Nokia); shocking. just shocking.
This goes without saying
15. That incredibly bright blue light which lights up a room every 10 seconds.
Turn your phone over at night, plug your charger in will also stop the flashing blue led, put some black tape over it.
16. SD slot: Frequent loss of memory card
Anoying but will hopefully be resolved in future firmware release

General bugs (probably Three specific):

1. Persistence of divert symbol when going from 2G back to 3G (clears when you check status of diverts).
Dont use 3G so i dont have this problem
2. Inconsistency of missed call icon. (occasionally the main screen missed call icon disappears, but the 'sub-screen' mini missed call icon stays - goes with reboot).
I dont seem to have this problem
3. Web Browser crashing - present for both browsers, and fairly frequent
My web browser never crashes, sometimes it stops when on fringe of wifi signal...you realy need a wifi signal of at least 40% for the browser to work withought cliches

also do you have latest firmware ?

chrisccoulson wrote:15. You can turn the blue light off by disabling sleep mode (Tools -> Settings -> Phone -> Display)

But problem if you disable sleep mode is that your battery consumption goes up quite alot.

Hi, Cash, and thanks for the quick replies - some useful stuff here.

2. Messaging;
Dont know what your problem is with messaging..you need to expand
Sorry - forgot to go back and write that in... now I can't even remember what my rant was about messaing - I'll get back to you 😉

4. Key lock; automatic locking after inactivity after closing would be nice (rather than using 3rd party tool)
There are 3rd party tools for all configurations of locking the keypad, and some are free...there is even an app that will lock the keypad automatically when the slider is shut
yeah; I have autolock, but my point was that it shouldn't be a 3rd party add-on, AFAICS, autolock seems to lock the keypad during an active call, which is a bit annoying - is this just me - is there a setting?

5. Contacts; Why can't I search using t9 to recognise names (e.g. 745 to find someone beginning with "RIL", rather than 777444555)
Cant be done as far as I know
probably one of the most useful features of windows smartphones (IMO), was the abilty to just start typing from the standby screen, and it t9d the name. fantastic

8. Wifi; Setup overly complicated, and across too many settings and screens (esp. with secure networks). Manual doesn't help here at all
I find wifi set up quite easy, I just set the phone to always ask and then it searches for available networks and you can choose which one to connect to
Perhaps I'm missing a setting here; it seemed a maze to setup a secure WPA connection

9. Wifi; No easy way to turn this off, or activate a flight mode
Apparantly the wifi cant be turned off..I dont know how this effects use in plane, but flight mode is quite easy to activate, press on/off button and choose offline mode
OK - that's something I missed. Thanks!

11. Apps; When using web browsers you can't 'change connection' until it's loaded a page using the default connection
Not sure what you mean...can you expand
OK, I think this may be a setting issue - when it's set to connect to a defualt network, rather than "always ask", if the default connection is not present, it tends to get stuck in a loop of not being able to connect to the (non-existant) network. IMO it would make sence for this to say "I can't find the network - do you want to connect to something else". Anyway, I've changed mine to "always ask" to see if it now behaves differently. Thanks.

13. Log; why can't I call a number from the Log screen?
I can call nubers in my log screen by selecting number and pressing send key
That's strange - that didn't work last time I tried it (=user error!)

15. That incredibly bright blue light which lights up a room every 10 seconds.
Turn your phone over at night, plug your charger in will also stop the flashing blue led, put some black tape over it.
yeah - my phone sleeps on it's front 😉

General bugs (probably Three specific):

1. Persistence of divert symbol when going from 2G back to 3G (clears when you check status of diverts).
Dont use 3G so i dont have this problem

3. Web Browser crashing - present for both browsers, and fairly frequent

these seem to be Three related issues

also do you have latest firmware ?
I have v3.0618.0.2 (45.02)

I understand that there should be better keylock integrated into the phone, Nokia engineers probably thought the ask when slider shut is ok for most people

I dont get problems with my keypad being locked during active calls

I use the following key lock apps

1, mlock, great program, lets you assugn any ket to lock the phone with one keypress..I use left softkey so that if I end a call I just move my thumb up a little and lock the keypad

2, also handy lock will lock the keypad automatically when you shut the slider, and also has a timer to lock the phone in case you forget

Mlock

Handylock

(8) I didnt really set up a secure connection, my wifi at home has mac address filtering, and when I am out I tend to only use free wifi hotspots withough needing encription, so it may be a little more complicated to set up

Cash wrote:But problem if you disable sleep mode is that your battery consumption goes up quite alot.

That could be why my battery life is pretty bad at the moment! I may have to consider turning my phone on to its front at night

chrisccoulson wrote:That could be why my battery life is pretty bad at the moment! I may have to consider turning my phone on to its front at night

I did battery test and the battery life is improved quite alot when you switch on sleep mode, I just plug in charger at night and that switches the blue led off.

Also if you dont need 3g then turn this off and you will increase your battery life more.

Hi Cash,

Just to add my views...

6 & 7. Syncing.
If the handset and PC are paired and set to auto-connect (Bluetooth) or if the USB cable is used to make the connection, PC Suite can easily be configured to automatically (and silently - no prompts on PC or N80) synchronise. The author of this thread only needs to launch the Synchronise app, and customise the settings instead of using the default ones.

16. SD Slot
I have never had a problem with SD cards and have used about 5. Cards used were Nokia 128Mb, Sandisk 1Gb, Sandisk 2Gb, Generic 2Gb. Not a single problem.

3. Web Browser Crashing
I get this a lot - I have assumed it's a memory leak problem. Viewing My-eBay pages on the N80 is unreliable for me.

Apart from the above points everything else you said I agree with.

P.S. I am on FW 3.0618.0.2 and was previously on 3.0617.x.x

Hi Dez

Do you know what the difference between the 3.0617 and 3.0618...where there any fixes or is it just a cosmetic difference... if any

The mem card problem has only happened to me on 3 occations, I just remove and put back in and its fine

3.0618 is for '3' UK and Ireland network only, basically it disables the function that allows you to switch to a '2G or GSM' network, locking the phone to 3G networks only.

Also adds a '3' network screensaver, other than that there are no changes from 3.0617

Cheers Ratkat..I always thought that was the case 😊

Hi Dez,

Could you kindly help me identify the sync settings I need to change? I'm syncing via USB, when I connect initially the n80 prompts me to select which transfer mode - I can't remember the options, but I always choose PC Suite.

Thanks,

Dave.

Follow the path below

Menu/Connectivity/Data Cbl./Data Cable mode/ then select pc suite instead of ask on connection

hi Cash,

i am 99% sure its the same as 3.0617 but with 3 branding - boot up logo, theme, connection settings all pre- loaded.

the only other thing that might be different is the network setting to change from dual mode - on 3.0618 the alternate option is UMTS (3G) ONLY , but where on 3.0617 its allegedly GSM ONLY

can you confirm this difference?

Dez

Hi Dez

With the 3.0617 I can choose between dual mode, UMTS only or GSM only

Ratkat wrote:Page 79😃

Who reads the manuals anyway ...haha..I get more tips and help from this forum 😊

Cash wrote:Hi Dez

Looks like 3 disabled the GSM ONLY option then. Understandable since their SIM CARDS roam to O2 when 3G is not available, so they must pay a fee.

I am on T-Mobile but I don't live in a 3G area, so installing 3.0618 FW was something of a mistake, roll on v 4.xxxx in a few weeks (hopefully!)

OK, here's another couple of gripes for you experts to put me straight on...

1. How can I get the calendar alert to just do it's thing once? right now I have it set to use "Beep" as the alert tone, but when a reminder goes, it Beeps and the backlight comes on, then Beeps again... then again, then again.... make the noise stop..........

2. I've set the "Light time-out" to 5 seconds, but the backlight stays on for a full minute. I suspect this has something to do with the "Power save timeout", but this is already on it's minimum setting.

with these two points, it's no wonder the battery life is crap.

Any ideas?
