new to wi-fi

I know ther are loads of previous threads about wi-fi related topics, but im kinda thick and really dont understand what wi-fi actually is yet. I dont have a wireless network connection at home as of yet, so therefore have never needed to know before, but i keep hearing people talking about connecting to 'hotspots' for 'free' and things like that. Is it possible to connect to these? What are the settings needed?

Please tell me to f off if im being to thick....

In many public places there are wifi hotspots, some of these are free and some of them you have to pay for, the free ones are usually in independant bars, restaurants, shops etc, they are free because the owners of these premesis are trying to attract more custom, I mostly go to bars and restaurants with free hotspots because I need to connect many times in the day.

Paid hotspots you will more likely find in places like airports, big franchises for example like mcdonalds (i dont actually know if mcdonalds have them but that was just an example).

There are websites on the internet that will tell you where hotspots are, but there are many that are also not known about or are not on the website.
For example

http://www.jiwire.com/search-hotspot-locations.htm
http://www.wifinder.com/

you can also install a wifi finder app into your phone that will scan at preset times to search for a wifi hotspot, but these obviously drain the battery quicker.

or you can just use the N80 by trying to connect to the internet through the web browser...not the services browser (icons look the same but the web browser has small white lines through the icon of the earth, if you use services browser then you may be charged by your network operator)

Set the connection to "ask always", and all wifi hotspots that are detected will be shown...free ones usually dont have a little padlock next to them.

Hope that clears some things up for you 😊
