Hi all!
Just received my N80 on Three, and so far so good. I was expecting bad things after scanning these forums, and today I've hit my first brick wall. However, I don't think it's the N80 at fault here.
I'm trying to use jmIRC and Agile (for MSN), and I can't get connected on either application. HTTP connections are working fine and I can browse without problems.
I'm guessing that Three are blocking the neccessary ports - is anyone else on Three that's tried using internet apps that use something other than port 80? Would be nice to have this confirmed so that I can lodge a complaint (not that it will do any good). I pretty much need to be connected to MSN wherever I am, as I use it a lot to communicate with colleagues on another site!
Three is famous for their "walled garden" approach to services and where they want to let people go. Recently - at least in some regions - they opened up more access via Yahoo (might only work for web browsing, I suspect; i.e., probably won't let you do IM).
Yeah, I've just been reading on 3g.co.uk and it appears I'm SOL on this particular issue. Looks like we just get ports 80 and 110, and the opened-up internet hasn't changed that. Wish I'd known this before I decided to join, but luckily I'm still in the get-out period. I guess there's some things you don't find out until the phone's activated and ready to use 😞
Anyone else on Three want to share my pain? Anyone on any of the other UK networks want to tempt me across?
im on 3 uk and my agile messenger works fine on a WLAN.
3 are abit like an overprotective husband sumtimes!
Yeah, I forgot to mention - it's all working fine over my flat's wifi connection, but I'd really love to be able to use Agile on the go. Time to start investigating other networks methinks.
If you get the Wireless Web add on for 15 pounds a month you can get 56meg of unrestricted internet access from your phone, this also alows checking of pop/imap email, use of messenger programs such as Agile and other third party applications that require internet access.
Thanks, someone over at 3g.co.uk already suggested the Wireless Web addon. After a bit of wrangling with customer support, I got them to drop the free Yahoo internet (they wanted me to wait six months) and add the Wireless web immediately. It's a bit expensive just to open up some ports, but for the amount of data it's pretty cheap. So now I'm all sorted!
I have used Yahoo messenger and mail, which is free for anyone without web package, if you look a bit further on the Three services, they have launched MSN Messenger which is FREE FOR ALL, BUT unlucky for us it is not supported on N80....send a text to the said number and they will reply when the service is ready for N80.....
