How to delete emails locally?

Until recently I have been synchronising my 9300 with Outlook and including the last two weeks of emails in that synch. I assumed that I was keeping only the last two weeks worth of emails on the phone but I've discovered that the synch simply adds to what is already there and now I have 1,496 messages that I don't need. Further, I've changed my email method to Gmail and don't want to synch emails with the PC anymore.
I have tried to delete those emails following the instructions, Tools - delete emails locally etc, but nothing happens. It's a pain as my attempts to back up the phone slow to a crawl when it reaches the messages, messages I don't want anyway.
Any advice please anyone, or any other way of doing it? Thanks.

Sorry, but it doesn't. If you do that it will then say that they will be deleted the next time you synch and I think if I remember right that they will be deleted from the server as well. I finally managed it by moving all the emails to another folder and then deleting. I don't intend to synch with Outlook again but if I do I will have to make sure that I have archived those emails or I will lose them too. At least this way I got them off my phone.
